Greetings:
The Watts name has a long and varied history.
It originated in France as LeFleming.
If you have access to a library that has a good genealogy department see if they have the Burkes Commoners set. If so look up the "Watts of Hawksdale Hall". You will find it very interesting. Also, see "Watts of Rosehill, Scotland".
Good hunting (ancestors, that is!)

Hi LD, interesting post. Would you know how Le Flemming in France became Watts in England? I don't have access to any geneology libraries. Thanks

LeFlemming/Watts

Greetings:
This is a verbatim quote from the beginning of "Watts, of Hawkesdale Hall" as given in Burkes Commoners, pg 393, Vol ?.
""Wathes," "Wattys," &c.&c. was of considerable antiquity in the county of Northampton, where it flourished for the greater part of three centuries.
Simon Wathes, (traditionally descended from a French soldier of fortune, who accompanied King Stephen into England, A.D. 1135), was the father of .....

That's what the book says - but how one would go about proving or disproving that statement I do not know.
