My Grandfather Joseph Skarwecki was a WW2 hero. Although he would never talk about the war. I know bits and pieces of what he has done in Germany. If you have any information on how I could find his story please let me know. Dskarwecki Jr.

I used to work with Joe back in 70's. I know he was shot once by the GI behind him. He said he had stepped over a dead German Soldier thinking the guy was dead. The guy wasn't dead and started rising up to shoot him in the back. The GI behind Joe shot the German Soldier, but one of the bullets richocheted up and hit Joe. If I remember correctly it was in the arm.
I know Joe was very good at shooting squirrels in his backyard in Odenton with a pellet gun.
After Joe retired from the Civil Service I saw that he became the Chaplain for the local DAV Chapter. Suprised me. I never figured him to have any inclination in that direction. I called him up and asked him about it. He said he only became it because nobody else would take it.
Shortly before he passed away I called him up. My wife and I wanted to go see him. He always had an excuse for not being at home. I can understand it. He was a big strapping guy when I knew him. I suspect that's the way he wanted people to remember him.

Hello,
I was just checking out information on the internet and saw this posting ref. my dad (Joe Skarwecki). Yes, he is the Skarwecki from Wausau. I know he got shot in the elbow by friendly fire, but the exact details were never revealed to me. He also received 2 purple hearts from other wounds while in combat in France. I have some knowledge of his WWII days in France, but not as much as I'd like to know. If you have any questions or other "war stories" I'd love to know.
Thanks.. Dave Skarwecki

This is the same Joseph Skarwecki, this message was posted by my son. When Joe died his wife made a folder that included the orders for his three purple hearts, silver star and Legion of Merit. I would like to add the this folder with stories from people who knew about his time in the military. Any information I would be truly thankful for.
