RE: Allen & Ann Coleman

We are attempting to locate any descendents of our great-grandfather’s two brothers John (or Johnnie) and Alonzo. The 1870 Census for Jackson County Georgia list a household consisting of Allen Colman age 85 born in SC, Ann Coleman age 85 born in SC, Mary Williams age 40 born in SC, Emmit Williams age 15 born in GA, Alonzo Williams age 14 born in GA and John Williams age 10 born in GA.

The story handed down from our parents and grandparents is that Emmit (or Emit or Emmitt) and his brother Alonzo set off from Stone Mountain Georgia in the late 1870’s for Texas. The story has it that Emmit got as far as the Tyro/Harmontown area in Lafayette County, MS where he met and fell in love with his wife-to-be and that Alonzo went on to Texas. We know that Emit Reynolds Williams (1853-1917) married Sarah Frances “Fannie” Rayborn (1858-1921) in 1878 and that the couple had seven children who are listed below. We are not sure but we have been told that Emit’s father was John Williams.

The 1880 Census for Lafayette County Mississippi list a household consisting of Emit Williams Age 26 born in GA, wife Fannie Williams age 21 born in MS, brother Johnnie Williams age 18 born in GA and Columbus Williams age six months born in MS. In 1937 when he was age 10 John Cully Williams, a grandson of Emit Reynolds, traveled with his father John Thurber and his uncle Christopher Columbus to visit an “Uncle John and Aunt Annie” in Gainesville GA. John Cully now age 78 remembers Uncle John as being an “old man”, he also recalls that he spoke to him years later by phone, maybe in the 1970s or 80s.
Emit Reynolds Williams (1853-1917) married (Nov 7, 1878) Sarah Frances Rayborn (1858-1921) Children:
Christopher Columbus Williams (1880-1955)
Pearl Williams (1881- ??)
John Thurber Williams (1883-1952)
Maggie Williams (1888-1896)
Lillian Mae Williams (1890-1972)
Willie Lester "L.W." Williams (1892-1958)
Alonzo Allen "Lonnie" Williams (1896-1956)

My great-grandfather was Alonzo Allen Williams - he was born in Jackson County to John F Williams and Keturah Margaret Coleman. The family story is that he and his wife (Artie-Missy Pharr) and children and several of Artie-Missy brothers came to Texas (Collin and Kaufman counties) in 1900. My grandfather was the next to youngest of their Children. Alonzo Allen Williams is buried in San Antonio. Is this what you are looking for ? Hope that this helps you.

Hello Laury,

I feel there is a reasonable possibility that we are researching the same Coleman & Williams families. I have recently had a couple of emails in response to a classified I ran in the Gainesville newspaper from Vicki Williams Parker who is related to the same Williams family. (John Morgan Williams, Emmit & Alonzo or Alonza)

Emmett or Emit Reynolds Williams was my Great-Grandfather who was born near Stone Mountain Georgia in or about 1853. We have full details on all of his decedents but nothing on neither his ancestors nor the decedents of his brothers John and Alonso.

I am new at this; how do we determine if we are decedents from the same Williams line?

Regards,

John & Sue Williams
