Changing your name

Surnames: Dalyrmple, Wilson
My grandfather, who I was led to believe was called Walter Wilson but I have recently found out this his actual name was Walter Dalrymple. He was born in 1892 (give or take a few years) and I was told my aunt of mine, who I have no contact with now, that he changed his name from Dalrymple to Wilson so he could get into the military.

If that's the case, any one want to take a guess as to why he would do that? I'm baffled.

I see other men named Dalrymple as enlisted in U.S. Marines from 1875 to 1940's when database years ends. Also in the VA BIRLS death index with birth years 1890 to 1900 and later for all services. So it was not the Military that required the change. When and where did he enlist? He either made a personal choice or had a something in his past that would disqualify him.
Have you found a WWI Draft Registration Card for him? Which name?
