I am the great granddaughter of Samuel Scott Rhodes. We believe he was born in 1886 in Alabama and died in an auto accident in 1919. He was married to a Pluma Mae Anderson. They were married sometime before 1907. My grandfather Tom Rhodes was born in June 28, 1907, his sisters Lucille was born May 28, 1912 and his baby sister was born on March 11, 1917. We have no idea if Samuel Rhodes had any brothers or sisters. We believe that his father was Malachi Green Rhodes Jr. If you have any information. Please contact me.

In my personal notes, I show over a hundred Sams. I couldn't find a Sam S. for you, but I found one entry for a Malachi.

MALACHI: d.17Aug1714, m. Dorothy Whipple (1680-1728) on 8Mar1699/1700 in Warewick RI. They issued two children, Malachi Jr (m. Mary Carder) and Sarah (m. Benjamin Tillinghast).

Thankyou for the information. I do know that there might be a Malachi Green Rhodes Jr. which might be his father. We aren't sure whether Sam was of Indian decent becasue his son Tom Allen looked so much like one and I ahve his coloring.

Cindy,

Having looked through the many different websites out there that have data on the different tribes and such, I seem to recall that there were not only Cherokee Rhoades/Rhodes families, but some were Melungeon, Choctaw and Chickasaw as well. There was a tie to the Osage, but I believe that was a tribe that wasn't in the AL area. Perhaps your next part of the search could begin with some of these.

Did you try the census' of the area? Don't forget that some of the states were changing their county boundaries back then, so be sure to look at surrounding county records too.

If you have any idea where Malachi may have died, I'd suggest you try taking a tour of the graveyards as well. Two good sites for them is usgenweb and interment.org. Try the obitcentral.com/cemsearch or findagrave.com. Maybe these will help.

Good luck! Z

I didnt copy Malachi Jr. brothers and sisters but did for Samuels. I do not have any more information about Samuel and sure would like it if you can make the link of your Samuel to Malachi, Jr. This line of Rhodes can be traced back to Hezekiah Rhodes of Middlesex Co, VA and further in the 1600's. Malachi line connects to Hezekiah through his son William. My line comes through Hezekiah's son Hezekiah. If you would like more information then email me at RRhoads97401@yahoo.com.

A good starting point to research is the counties that Malachi, Sr was married in and died in.
