Mecklenburg Co. NC Stewarts
Can you tell me who the children of Thomas Stewart
were and where they moved? I am trying to see if my
Stewarts go back to Mecklenburg Co. Several names moved
from M-county N.C. to Marshall,Giles, Lincoln Co Tenn.
Phifer, Kerr, McWhorter, Esselman, Orr, Houston, Bills,
and others. Also do you have any information on Robert
Stewart who left a will in M-County in 1777 and had wife
Isabell Houston. He died at age 35 in 1777. Is there
any link between Robert and Thomas Stewart??
I have been stumped on my Stewarts for 20 years. Any
help is appreciated.
I have a copy of the will of Thomas Stewart.
The only child I have researched is Olivia,ma James Callen and went to Dallas Co. Al early 1820's.
I will look for the will and get back to you.
My e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org
If you send me your e-mail,I will answer direct.
I'm interested in your posting for Mecklenburg Co. I have a Joseph Stewart m. to a Margaret McWhorter in KY, pre-1840. He was b. somewhere in NC in 1774. Could we have a connection? Thanks for your response.
I was searching for another surname recently and found information on the Stewart family in Mecklenburg County, NC in the early 1770's. I've tried entering the URL in this list but it doesn't work as it should.

Re: Mecklenburg Co. NC Stewarts, McWhorter, Young
I am looking for Young family connections of Rowan, Mecklenburg and surrounding counties of NC. York, SC will of Margaret Steward, 1790 says to children of James Young, to children of Alexander mcWhorter, son-in-law James Young, son Alexander Mcwhorter, dau. Mary.
Are these in your family? Did Margaret first marry McWhorter and then Stewart(Stuart)? Any Young data would be appreciated. Terry Young, Vale, NC.
Re: Mecklenburg Co. NC Stewarts
randy, my maternal grandparents were Stuards, don't know if i have any info to help you, do know spelling of stuard was about 4 ways over the centuries. my grandfather william vincent seth stuard was born in cannon county, TN in 1868, married anna bell cobb from adairville, ky in 1888, on jan. 5. there are many stuards today in robertson county, tn where grandparents settled. i was one of their 57 grandchildren. i never knew where the cobb and stuard families came from originally. we have some idea the stuards were stuarts from scotland. if you have info that might help me, i would appreciate it. thanks, stella
Re: Mecklenburg Co. NC Stewarts, McWhorter, Young
James Young was married to Jane/Jean, dau. of James and Margaret Stewart. He was chosen by Mary, later w/o Alexander McWhorter, as her guardian in Chester Co. Orphans Court in 1763.
The father, James d. in 1752 or 3 and will is filed in Chester Co.
I descend from Margaret McWhorter, d/o Alexander and Mary. Margaret m. 1) John Richey [NOT the one in the census records in York] 2) Daniel Easley in Livingston Co., KY, in 1805, and d. in Sangamon Co., IL, in 1836.
She was born c. 1773.
I have a Joseph, m. margaret McWhirter, 23 mar 1813, in Knox Co, Ky. S/o John Preston Stewart Sr, Joseph had three brothers, Alexander, Hiram, and John jr. Three sisters, Abigail, Mary polly, and Rebecca.
Thanks for your inquiry. This is where I am at right now. My William Stewart/Steward filed for a Tennessee State Land Grant which involved 27 acres on East Norris Creek in Lincoln Co. Tenn, near the present village of Mimosa, north of Fayetteville. This grant was recorded on Sept 10, 1818, and William may well have been there earlier. William Steward, as he is named in the grant, married Margaret(Peggy) ?? and their first child was born in around 1810, and since Margaret was born in 1789, it is presumed that William is a bit older. William and wife moved to somewhere in Mississippi by late 1822 or early 1823, for sons William (1823) and Calvin B. (1825) were born in Mississippi, where is unknown. By 1830, Margaret(Peggy) Stuart (as it is written) is shown as a head of household in the Lincoln Co. with 10 persons living there. The location is around the same neighbors in which she lived with her husband in the 1818-1822 time frame. So, my thought is that her husband died in Miss. and she moved back to the old home place to be near relatives/and/or neighbors.
The reason I am focusing on Mecklinburg Co. is that an immediate neighbor from 1830 in Lincoln Co. Tennessee census (James Esselman) came from there.
My Margaret moved to Giles Co. Tenn by 1845 and there were some other families from the old Lincoln Co. neighborhood that moved west one or two counties like my Margaret. So my William Steward was born in probably the 1780's and I am looking for anyone that might have a similar link to Lincoln Co. Tenn or Giles Co.Tenn.
One more point about a Preston Stewart. One man with that name lived within a mile or so of my Margaret in 1830 in Lincoln Co. Tenn. I can't prove a relationship with him at this point as the Preston name doesn't show up what so ever in my family. This Preston is registered in a DNA group and they are trying to get me to put in for William Steward as well.
Thanks for reading this long letter.
