My grandparents Elsie Papenfus and Albert Sheetz marriage license lists her parents as Carl Papenfuse and Alberta Baker. I have been told they came from Germany. They lived in Ohio. They had about 10 children. One other child was Emil Papenfus. I'm looking for any info on this Papenfus family. Thank You

I have found that Emil had a son Emil who was killed in the Second World War.

I am interested in Carl (my middle namesake) and am trying to sort out the two Carl Papenfuses, one of whom was in the Ohio State Prison in 1920 and apparently found innocent six years or so later.

I can only trace our branch of the family back to my grandfather Carl in Toledo. This Carl may have been my great grandfather. My grandfather Carl worked for the B&O railroad and died from injuries received at work.

Any help you could give me in my search for my family origins would be most appreciated.

Ed Papenfuse

I have limited info on the family.I have a 1910 census. That lists Carl Papenfoos(that is how it is spelled in census, later ones have spelling as Papenfus/e and Papenfuss)age 48. Immigration 1883 from Germany. Wife Albertina 43 years. and children Paul, Carl, Nellie, Amiel(Emil),Martha, Elsie(my grandmother), Eda(Edith), and John.

You can E-mail me directly if you would like to exchange more information.

I don't have your direct email address. You can write me directly at edp@mdsa.net.

I suspect that the son Carl is my grandfather. John must have been the baby in the family and lived with my father. My father (Edward Carl, Sr.) told me of having an uncle that was younger than he, named John. Have you tracked down the Carl who was in prison? I have a newspaper article from a 1922 Lowell Mass. newspaper which probably copied the Toledo Blade that says Carl (the father and possibly our great grandfather?) was found innocent after serving 6 years in prison. Supposedly the only witness against him (his daughter) recanted.
