Surnames: Papiz and Matwechuk
Both sets of in-laws came from the same village (Stojanow,
Stoyanov, Stoyanuv, Stoyaniw or Stoianiv). My husband's father said he came from Tarnopol. His name was Papish, but on his immigration papers his name was spelt Papiz. Grandfather's first name was Stefan and his wife was Ewa Zawisliuk. They came to Canada when my father-in-law was 3 years old, approx. 1910.

My mother-in-laws family name was spelt Matewchuk (Matwijczuk, Matwywejizuk, Matwejzuk, Matwejchuk). Her family came in 1903. Her father's name was Andrij and mother's name was Anna Wojcichowsky. Andrew's father name was Ilia, and his father's name was Hryc. I don't know if they all came at the same time.

Any information is appreciated, but the most important to me now is the spelling of the villiage/town and what would be the most probable port they departed from.

Thank you

Stojaniv, Radehiv district, Ukraine

Hello: Sorry I have not responded sooner but have been away. I tried to send emails to you but they keep getting bounced back to me. I have been sending them to batyuk@yahoo.co.uk. Is that the correct email?

My great grandmother was Agnes Wojciechowsky she was married to Vincentius Hopak or Hapak. My grandfather Francicus Hopak came from Potok Rosa. Any possibilities of a relation here? When Francicus arrived in Minnesota he eventually changed his name to Frank Hopkins. He had a cousin Marcin Klusak from Galicia who also settled in Minnesota. Thank you. samlows1@comcast.net

Hello and thank you for your enquirey. Yes the people you found on the Ellis Island roster are my grandmother and her three children. The voyage you mentioned was their second voyage. Mary and her two daughters first arrived in America in August of 1907 aboard the same ship. The area listed on the ships roster as their home was Zablocie, Galacia, Austria. This area is in the area of today's Kracow Poland. Mary was baptised in kenty Galacia Also near Kracow. Her 1st husband Jan Klusak/Kusak , Mother's maiden name Herzyk, was also from that area. Have lots of info on Mary and her husband Jan including a wedding photo. Only thing I know for sure about her 2nd husband Franciszek Hopak/Hapek was that he and Mary's first husband were cousins and that his baptismal information here in the States lists Potok Rosa. For many years the family thought that meant somewhere in Russia, now we are not so sure and have decided to do some searching. Once again thank you for your assistance.
