Was it necessary to have a passport for travel to the USA in the 1880's.
What documents would be needed?
I am trying to find out information on my gr grandfather who left the Uk.
As it appears he may have changed his name, I am finding it very difficult.
Kind regards,
Elaine in OZ.

Hi ???
It's a difficult one.
I am trying to confirm a persons (being my gr grandfather) identity.
I have found a passenger list on the Missouri that arrived in Boston, USA july 1883 from Liverpool UK.
Henry Buss. age 29.
My gr grandfathers name was Henry Hiesley b. 1854-5.
He disappears off the uk census's after the 1881 census.
In 1932 a Henry Buss of Novato, Marin County, California. died and bequeathed his estate to a family of children in Lancashire, one being my grandfather, and his siblings.
In his will, which I have a copy of, he stated that he had no children legitimate or otherwise.
Henry Buss was married in the USA according to his will.
My gr grandfather, Henry Hiesley was the father to the 6 children that the inheritance was shared.
As I was never able to establish or find a death for him in the uk, it seems probable that the two henry's are the same. All uk census's still have my gr grandmother listed as married, not widowed.
In order to confirm the two men are the same, I was hoping to find some record of the man leaving Liverpool, as to what papers, passport he would have needed if any?
I have only found Henry Buss of the above address in California, 1920 & 1930, on one of the census it states that he arrived in 1883 and was naturalized in 1887.
It stated in the obituary, that he had been a resident of Novato for 16 years.
Where he spent his time between arriving in the USA and the 1920 census, is anyones guess.
I have been trying for many years off and on and have hit so many brick walls, to the point of giving up, with frustration, that I figured maybe someone with fresh eyes and ideas may help.
Regards, Elaine, in OZ.

Hi Again,
Henry Hiesley on the 1881 census, was located under the name Hiesby, he was visitor to the Blackledge family in Accrington Lancashire, aged 27.
He dissappears after this.
His wife Mary and children were under the name Thesley.
Then on the 1891 and 1901 census she was in 68 Paxton St Accrington Lanc. Still as wife and in 1901 at the same address but under Hicsley.
there has always been a problem with the spelling, which has made it doubly hard.
Regards Elaine
