McQUARRIE 1881 Belfast

McQUARRIE 1881 Belfast

Posted: 7 Nov 2007 1:10PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: McQuarrie, Rutherford, Greenaway, Tilbury
I have a book of Robert Burns' poems inscribed:

"H. E. McQuarrie
Belfast, 1881"

It's my only clue to the extension of my Scottish and possibly Irish ancestry, still a brickwall some 7 years on. The Scottish name (related?) was RUTHERFORD James, b. c.1835 Scotland, and possibly a soldier (Royal Horse Guards) in England 1861-1871...

His wife (no visible marriage so far) was Lydia [GREENAWAY?] b. c1837 Hounslow, Middlesex Her daughter Lydia m. Robert TILBURY 1880 Fulham; all 4 lived in Faroe road, Hammersmith, in 1881.

HELP!!!!

Caroline

Thank you - it's a step forward! Perhaps it might be possible to find out how old Harriet Elizabeth was, from a later census. With the book were only vague mentions of a "great-aunt" but not whose great-aunt...

Do you know if McQUARRIE would have been a frequent name in Belfast? I don't een know if it has Scottish or Irish origins.

Thank you so much - maybe now I'll make some progress with this line.

I've been looking at the inscription in the book since I was a child - and now I'm 62!!!!!!!!!!

The info you sent me was correct (marriages, will) and I think H. E. McQUARRIE m. ROSIER, finished up in Bristol, but can't afford all the certificates for the moment!

Alexander Fisher McQUARRIE, of the Black Watch, seconded to the Monmouthshire Militia in 1863 after serving overseas, married with children. After 1st wife Sarah died, he married Emily WATERMAN 13 July 1895 (reputed to have been a nanny in the Duke of Fife's household); they seem to have then become the caretaker's of the ANNESLEY's estate in Castlewellan. After Alexander's death Emily returned to London, UK, where she died in 1841 age 85.

I couldn't find any ROSIER children, but perhaps one day a McQUARRIE descendant will contact me, and I could pass on the book.
