Can anyone tell me if you know of a Penelope Keys or
her family from the 1860s and 1870s. I would like to
know who they were and anything about them.

I don't know anything specific about Penelope Keys in the timeframe you mentioned but there was a Keys family in Currituck Co.

I suggest you look at the census records and also the books on Currituck Co. Deeds. Here is a deed I have that mentions William Cays (Keys):

JOHN CRANK OF CURRITUCK CO., SOLD TO WILLIAM CAYS, A PARCEL OF LAND LYING ON THE NORTH BANKS. THE BEGINNING CORNER AT A PINE THEN RUNNING TO A SWEET GUM THEN RUNNING A NORTHEAST COURSE TO THE SEA SHORE THENCE RUNNING THE SEA SHORE TO MATTHIAS TOLER'S LINE, CONTAINING 50 ACRES. THIS INDENTURE WAS MADE AUG. 29, 1821.
WIT: JOSHUA GARD JOHN CRANK

The 1850 Census for Currituck lists a Penelopy Keys as 44 with several young children.

You are probably aware of the Currituck web page but if not here is the address http://www.ncgenweb.us/currituck/index.html

There is a wealth of information there.

Hope some of this helps.

I have a Penelope Keys in my database who was born between 1800-1806 and died after the 1870 Currituck Co. census was taken. I have Penelope being the d/o Azariah Baum & Sarah "Sallie" Midyett. Penelope had a relationship or was married to William Keys sometime before 1843...I have never found a marriage certificate but most Currituck marriage records are not extant before about 1851. William, who was born in Virginia, died from an accident in May 1850. Penelope is seen in the census from 1850-1870.

Kay thank you for replying. In your report to me, you have
some of the info I have. It is important. In the 1860 census
there is a Sallie/Sarah Gallop 6. And another gallop in a
later census. I am looking for this Sarah Gallop, but I
have her father as Samuel on her marr. cert. and i guess
it is Gallop. She marr. James A. Hall Jr. Do you know if
any of these Gallops are of Indian descent. Looking at her
daughter she could have been one. And this is my grgrmother
with this Penelope Keys. But i do not know why she is there.
Unless some where along the line this Samuel Gallop is
related to Penelope or perhaps she had a fling with him.
Any thoughts?

I really don't know anything about Indian descent and don't have a clue what happened to the 6-year old Sarah Gallop that was found in the 1860 census. I do know that Penelope Baum was 1st married to Mathias Toler (his will probated Aug. 1842) and they had a son (among other children) named James Hall Toler so the Hall name may have some significance here. In what county did James A. Hall, Jr. marry Sarah? I didn't find a marriage for them in Currituck or Dare Co.

James A. Hall marr. Sallie gallop in Herford, N. C.
in 1871. And the cert. states Sallies father was a
Samuel. I presume Samuel Gallop.
