Hi Erna
I received a message "John Skea" posted by you in response to my initial enquiry on 3.11.1998, and it said it was an auto-generated notice & to reply, hence my message.

I have a marriage between a David Couper (Cattleman at Graemshall) and a Douglas! Craigie of Egilshay (H of Sound) on 23 October,1857 (Rousay & Egilshay). They had a daughter Betsy Couper born 1860. Does any of this ring a bell?

I think we have a link but we may need to work on finding it. My CRAIGIE is Hugh CRAIGIE, m Margaret MURRAY 8 Nov 1799 in Egilshay. I don't have a date of birth or parents for him..

I have a list of the tenants present in Egilshay in 1760. There are 15 of them and they include:
William Craigie in ?Whyflet
Hugh Craigie in Sound
John Craigie in Sound

The writing is a bit hard to interpret, but there was nothing that looked like Alexander as a surname.

I will look further for clues to a link, and look forward to hearing from you

Regards
Lisa Bate

There seem to be a few of us looking at the name CRAIGIE from Egilshay. If we put together all that we know, maybe we can sort them out. From information I have, there were only 3 tenants called CRAIGIE on Egilshay in 1760, and two of those lived in Sound. There was also a Hugh COUPER in ?midshael, was your COUPER from Egilshay? But back to CRAIGIE, have you found out anything more about your Douglas CRAIGIE?

I am a descendant of the Douglas Craigie and David Couper who married in 1857. An Annie Cooper (spelling seems to have changed since 1857) who was born in 1899 would have been my great grandmother. David Couper and Douglas Craigie were her grandparents.
Are you also related?

If you have not already done so, may I recommend that you look at Rousay Roots by Robert C Marwick; your James Craigie is ref E51. (This book provides links to literally thousands of your relatives). An internet search on "Rousay Roots" should do the trick!

Thank you for recommending the book Rousay Roots by Robert C. Marwick, which I do have. I haven't been into my Craigie genealogy for quite a while so didn't realize there was an internet site Rousay Roots. I certainly will look into this.

I am trying to trace my family tree. My mother is Catherine Tarbet. She was Catherine O'Neill born 30.11.1923. Her parents were John O'Neill and Annie Cooper and they were married in Port Glasgow Scotland on 01.01.1900. Annie Cooper was born in Govan Scotland on 9.6.1899. Her parents were James Manson Cooper (Couper) and Annie Scott and they were married in Govan Glasgow Scotland on 26.8.1897. James Manson Cooper (Couper) was born on 31.3.1873 in Holm and Palpay Orkney and his parents were David Cooper and Dugles Craigie. I think there were other children who could have been :
Helen Couper d.o.b. 7.2.1859
William McGillivary Couper d.o.b.7.3.1862
Mary Leonard Couper d o b 22.11.1863
David Shearer Couper d o b 11.7.1866
Harriet Couper d o b 11.11.1867
Joanna Baikie Couper d o b 29.7.1871
then James Manson Couper 31.5.1873

We may be related somewhere along the way.
