Does anyone know of a family crest for Hehir. I have a black and white copy of one from a Boston newspaper which purportedly came from a book entitled New England Family Crests. I am not sure of its authenticity.

You might want to look at www.irishsurnames.com. Click on "Coat of Arms", then Click on "H". You'll find a coat of arms for O'Hehir. I can't tell you how accurate it is, but I compared other Clare family coats of arms illustrated on the www.clarelibrary.ie site to those on this site and they matched perfectly.

No John. Our ancestors were a bloody bunch of Irish rebels, and they probably didn't go in for the family crest stuff. Too busy doing it, to record and take pride in it.

But if you come across a crest, I'd like to know about it.

my mum is a O'Hehir, from county Clare, where the family still lives.

My great grandmother Maria Heher b 1803 married a James Fox 1828 and came to England 1834/1836. Any chance we are related?

The spelling of Heher donates that you are probably of Scottish ancestry, whereas my family is from Ireland. If we are related, it could be generations back. Sorry, I have no other information.

Hello, have just joined the list. I have an ancestor Stephen Hehir (born abt 1795), transported in 1831 to NSW, I suspect because he may have been related to Matthew Hehir, tried as a "white boy" (I believe they were an agrarian socialist group), tried at the same time and on the same ship to NSW. They were tried at Ennis, so obviously came from that part of Co Clare. Would you have any further info on the "white boys", land clearances near Ennis, and this family in particular?
