JOEL b. in VA. shows up in 1820 Overton Co., Tennessee census with a wife, 2 sons between the ages of 18&26, 2 sons under 10; 1 daughter between 10&16, 2 daughters under 10. In the 1850 Overton Co., Tennessee census he is listed as age 66 with a wife Sally age 27, daughter Melinda age 12, daughter Amanda age 6, daughter Milly age 3. This is not the same JOEL whose parents were Thomas & Mary (Pemberton) Maxwell. Any info on this JOEL and/or his previous wives and children would be appreciated.

Hi, I saw your posting and have a little info concerning Joel Maxwell of VA. He had a son named George Maxwell b 1805, Montgomery Co who marr Elizabeth Nicholas, dau of Thomas Nicholas and Susannah Travis. George and Elizabeth had at least 7 children. The oldest, Susannah Maxwell, marr A P Warren in Overton Co. They are my gggrandparents. I have seen an 1836 tax list in Overton Co that lists Joel Maxwell Jr and Joel Maxwell Sr. This fits the 1820 Overton Co census record of Joel Maxwell as the household shows 1 male over 45 (Joel Sr) and 2 males bet 26-45.One of which I believe is Joel Jr. Estimates of Joel Maxwell Jr birth of abt 1784 would put Joel Sr birth est at 1750/60. Hope this helps

I do not think that the Sally listed in the 1860 census can be his wife. His wife, Mary Polly (age 75) is for some reason listed in the household of their son George Maxwell that year. Were they really divorced, or was she so ill that her son's family was taking care of her??? This is kind of fishy, but I DO know that our Overton County/Putnam County Joel Maxwell is NOT the same one that ended up in Mississippi

I think that the dates for Joel Sr (1782) and his son Joel Jr are very well documented. Joel Jr. Died around 1840 in Illinois, shortly after arriving there. His wife and three children, then travelled to Carroll County ARK, then into Madison County AR to live with other family members. Joel Jr.'s sister Eliza Maxwell b. 1810 had married William C Morris in Overton County. She died en route to Carroll County AR around 1842ish and it is believed that Joel Jr's wife was part of that Train to Arkansas.

Do you have knowledge of Sally Maxwell b. 1818 d. 1905 in Overton, Tennessee who married Albert G. Stockton, son of John E. Stockton? I was thinking the Mary Polly you mentioned may have been her mother since Mary and Joel (living next door to each other) appear in the 1830 census. John E. and family appear on the same page. Thanx.
