Since you know that Alexander SIMPSON was dead in 1881 I assume you have the 1881 Census with Richard in Forfar??
Of note is his mother Mary

Mary SIMPSON,W,55,F,Brighton-Fife-Scotland,Mother,(Domestic Servant)

Of interest is her stated place of birth (Brighton- Fife). I had heard of this somewhere before but could not think where?
If you go to
www.old-maps.co.uk and put in the grid ref 335866,713113 you will be where Brighton was in 1855. It is now on the edge of Cupar Muir and Damside and the name is no linger used, there were however a small number of people living there in 1881.

So from this I would guess that Mary was born Abt 1826 and the bigger area would have been Cupar.

Using this and the other information I hunted around the area for David's birth Etc.

I found one that possibly fits??

David BAIN b 29 Jun 1792 Chr 1 Jul 1792 Ceres Fife. Parents John BAIN Catherine TERRAS , these parents produced 10 children eight in Ceres but more interesting was the last two Mary and Henry who were born in Cameron Parish which brings this family to the area of where you have them. Does this tie in with any of your research??

Just come across the Bayne families in Fife queries and realise that Alexander Bayne (or Bain) born 1790 is one of the 10 or 11 children of John Bain and Katharine Terras who married in 1784 in Ceres.

Alexander went on to have a son Heriot b 1825, he had two sons, Alexander and Stephen. Stephen born 1851 had three sons, Alexander, Heriot and James born 1881. James' son Stephen is my father, also Stephen Bayne, born 1921.

Look forward to continuing this correspondence!

I have been in touch with Meriel to try to clear this up, but decided to leave this message just so others aren't confused.
Alexander married 1811, and had children between 1812 and 1829, and his wife was not the lady Meriel has. Unless he was guilty of a 'misdemeanour' and his wife forgave him to the point she bore him more children, I suspect Meriel has the wrong Alexander. I do not think it's her fault, as she got a lot of info from a 'professional' researcher, so who can blame her.
