Kilcooley Fitzgeralds

I believe that I am a descendent of a Fitzgerald family of Kilcooley. My research connects our American branch to siblings who left Kilcooley in the 1840s-mid 1850s.

Their parents were Thomas Fitzgerald and Mary Murphy. I was able to find baptism records for their children James (1811), Mary (1813), Johanna (1816), (Maurice (1819), John (1823) and Michael (1827). I believe they had a brother Patrick born sometime around 1816-1818 but I found no record for him and he is the one of the siblings I am most interested in.

I was recently told of a possible connection to a Mike Fitzgerald who died in Kilcooley in 1957 leaving a daughter Sheila and a sister Bridget. The house and land were sold and Sheila, who was a nurse, moved to England. Bridget was elderly and has since passed. My understanding is that Sheila was the last of that branch of Fitzgeralds in Kilcooley.

Since I am at a point where I am stuck tracing anything else in the 1800's, I would like to try to make the link to family that remained in Ireland. If anyone can give me some ideas or knows of this family, I'd love to hear from you.

Not part of your family but I'm a big advocate of using the telephone directory to locate people who still live in the same areas from the 1800's.
This is the Kerry Co. board so was surprised to find that there is no Kilcooley in Kerry.

Kilcooley is a townland in the parish of Kilcroan in Galway, Poor Law Union of Glenmaddy or Parish in Roscommon in the Poor Law Union of Strokestown.

A Union town would be the largest town in an area covering about 10-12 mile radius. It would contain smaller towns and villages, parish's and townlands.

You could give it ago first looking for the name Kilcooley and then with a map look for FG's within the PLU. Send letters to a particular area FG's.

There are Fitzgerald's in all three counties, Kerry, Roscommon and Galway.

Without knowing which of the three counties these FG's are from I can't help with the phone book you will need to try yourself. I can't put the website as rootsweb consider the phone book a commercial entity.

I didn't find any FG's in the 1911 census with any part of the census using Kilcooley, I would of thought Bridget might be there if she was elderly and alive in 1957. Should this be 1857?

The easiest way to connect families to each other is the parish registers or through family members.

Kerry does not belong to an Irish History Foundation that operates a datebase on behalf of most of Ireland's county genealogy offices. Kerry records can be found on
www.irishgenealogy.ie (there are early records but don't know how late they might run, usually 1899)

Galway and Roscommon both belong to this History Foundation.
It is a not for profit, but fees are charged.

Thank you for the time you spent with this message. Kilcooly is a village in the Parish/Townland (?) of Kilmakedar on the Dingle Peninsula and with the Dingle Poor Law region in Kerry County. Its Post office is in Ballydavid. Apparently there are several Kilcooly places in Ireland! My ancestors have baptism records from the Ballyferriter Parish in County Kerry but I believe that is because that was the only Catholic Parish back in the early 1800s.

My understanding is that there are no Fitzgeralds currently living in Kilcooly who are related to me.

Hi: I was just looking on the website www.irishgenealogy.ie
for a baptism and came across Ardfert, Kerry and the place born was Kilcooley. You might find some information
on this website. Some have an image from the parish registers.

Have you tried facebook for contacting locals? There must be some people who married into the Fitzgeralds.
