I have the information on John Baptist CISSELL posted on my web site, though do not have the latest information on his parents. There is much controversy over this. I believe his father is Matthew CISSELL, as do some other CISSELL/CECIL researcher's but it is still speculative.

Some of this information is posted under the ancestors of Bernard Eugene THOMPSON.

In my previous post, I mispoke myself-due to late night brain fog. The Parents of this John Baptist CISSELL are deduced to be Thomas CISSELL and ANN ??
Ancestors of John Baptist Cissell

Generation No. 1

1. John Baptist Cissell, born Abt. 1740 in St. Mary's County, MD; died Bef. 2-Apr-1799 in Washington Co, KY. He was the son of 2. Thomas Cissell and 3. Ann Unknown. He married (1) Rebecca Unknown Abt. 1762. He married (2) Susanna Ann? Brewer 1770 (Source: Barbara Fitzgerald bcf855@nwws.com 65 Upland Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906.). She was the daughter of John Baptist Brewer and Elizabeth Goddard.

Notes for John Baptist Cissell:
From Donna Van Zandt
Carol99 adds that KY, Wash Co, Inventory 2 APR 1799, appraisers: Leonard Mattingly, Sr., James Parson, Ignatius Mattingly.
O'Rouke seems to refer to him as John Francis Cissell, but that seems to be in error.

Parentage is still speculative, but Barbara Cecil Fitzgerald and I think this is his father.

Children of John Cissell and Rebecca Unknown are:

i. Thomas Cissell, born 14-Apr-1762 in St. Mary's County, MD (Source: O'Rourke, Births St. Andrews Epis. Church, Leonardtown, Maryland.); married Elizabeth Howard 8-May-1818 in Washington Co, KY (Source: Paul Tobler e-mail of Jun 7, 1998 tobler@hctc.net).

ii. Ann Nancy Cissell (Source: O'Rourke, Births St. Andrews Epis. Church, Leonardtown, Maryland.), born 2-Feb-1766 in Leonardtown, St. Mary's County, MD (Source: Barbara Fitzgerald bcf855@nwws.com.); died Abt. 1820 in Washington Co, KY; married Leonard Mattingly 7-Jan-1788 in Nelson Co, KY (Source: Barbara Fitzgerald bcf855@nwws.com.).

iii. William Cissell (Source: O'Rourke, Births St. Andrews Epis. Church, Leonardtown, Maryland.), born 10-Aug-1767 in St. Mary's County, MD; died Abt. 1846 in Daviess Co, KY; married (1) Catherine Unknown; married (2) Elizabeth Unknown; married (3) Sarah Adams 17-Apr-1784 in St. Mary's County, MD (Source: Marriages of St. Mary's County, MD 1634-1900by Margaret K. Fresco Eastern Shore Regional Library, Salisbury, MD 21801).

Notes for William Cissell:
Donna Van Zandt writes that it seems strange that some of the children were born in Maryland when he was supposed to be in Kentucky. Did he return to Maryland to marry his second wife Catherine have a daughter in Maryland named Catherine and then return to Kentucky and from there to Indiana??? Not very likely, probably errors here..
This William served in Capt Vertrees Co under the command of Gen. George Rogers Clark on the Wabash Expedition in 1786. Member of the 4th Ky Regt. Family moved to Indiana after 1815

Children of John Cissell and Susanna Brewer are:

i. Zachariah Cissell, born 21-Jun-1771 in SMC, MD (Source: (1) O'Rourke, Births St. Andrews Epis. Church, Leonardtown, Maryland., (2) Donna Van Zandt (donavan@netins.net, Notes sent from Salt Lake City by Darlee Sissel.); died in Marion Co, KY; married (1) Catherine Yates Aft. 14-Apr-1795 in SMC, MD (Source: Marriages of St. Mary's County, MD 1634-1900by Margaret K. Notes for Zachariah Cissell:
His godparents are William Russell and Mary Davis

Notes for Jeremiah Cissell:
According to pg 45 of Webbs, 1884 Centenary of Catholicity in KY-He and his brothers: Matthew, Zachariah and Sylvester are listed as early settlers on Hardin's Creek (now St. Mary), Nelson (now Marion) Co, VA (now KY)

Notes for Matthew Cissell:
The brothers Cecil of Cecilia College, Hardin Co, are sons of Charles and grandsons of this Mathew. Charles and his brother Mathew, Jr secured the passage of an act by the KY legislature empowering them, and all who bore the name in the state, to change it's orthography from Cissell to Cecil It is not believed, however, that the change was adopted outside the families of these two brothers.

Sr. Donnelly's book on Beaverdam Manor. (provided by Shirley Platt, Plattshirl@aol.com) The "Beaverdam Manor" Lot #40 "Fertility" containing 95 ½ acres was leased on 3/25/1744 to SARAH CISSELL. According to the Calvert Papers on 3/21/1762 SARAH CECIL (CISSELL) was in possession of 100 acres of "Beaverdam Manor". In 1768 this tract was in possession of JOHN CISSELL b. 1739, THOMAS CISSELL b. 1738 and ANN CISSELL b 1741. This is probably SARAH VAN RESWICK CISSELL, the widow of JOHN CISSELL(1) who was deceased prior to 5/31/1747. JOHN CISSELL's inventory was appraised on 5/21/1747. Hi! I just stumbled across your message from several years ago. I hope you're still "out there." I will check your website but, in case I don't connect with it, I figured I'd leave a message here too.

My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Theresa Cissell (b. 1847 in St. Mary's County, MD) the daughter of John B. Cissell (b. circa 1805 in St. Mary's County) and Mary Ann Wheeler.

John B. Cissell (b. 1805) was, apparently, the son of a Thomas D. Cissell who died in 1840. (Note that this is NOT the Thomas G. or H. Cissell who died in St. Mary's in 1831 leaving, among other children, a son Peregrine Cissell.)

Do you have any idea how my Thomas D. Cissell (d. 1840) fits into the larger St. Mary's County Cissell family? I can't tell you how much I'd appreciate any information! Thanks! John Dobricky
