Do the names Julio or Miquel ring a bell. They are related to my father Antonio Covarrubias. The family emigrated from Spain to Mexico. Most of the family still resides in Mexico City. Julio was a professor of languages (Univesity of Mexico) and Miquel was an anthropoligist and murialist with works in New York, California and Mexico. I do not know any of the current family still in Spain. I was told there is a village named "Cobarruvias" where the family originated. That spelling is suppose to be the correct spelling.

Actually the Covarrubias didn't immigrate "mainly" to Mexico maybe your branch did, but another branch, actually were viceroys for the King/ Queen of Spain, and were sent to rule in The their name vast Lands in South America. Now my branch reside in Chile, and a member of THIS branch worked in the Military and was the right hand man (Keno Covarrubias) of Pinnochet the dictator of Chile for 18-20 years...But me I'm from Canada.

PS. About the town in Spain, its about 2-4 hours south of Burgos and has 600 in Habitants..The town IS Named and spelled "COVARRUBIAS" I don't know where you got the spelling from but the way we spell our names is the way it's spelled on the maps there. The community has a tower and was a gated village in it's day and the names Covarrubias comes from "Cuevas Rubias" meaning "White or Blonde Caves" which I think WAS indigionous to the area at teh time.

Thank you for your reply and information. I was not aware of the immigration to South America and Chile specifically. My father (Antonio Covarrubias) was the son of Julio Covarrubias (Professor, University of Mexico) who was the brother of Miquel Covarrubias (Anthropologist and Artist/Murialist) in Mexico and the United States. I am aware of the family history including the "infamous" support of the royal family.

It is interesting to discover our roots. I also have a family history on my mothers side rooted in colonial America and England.

I will try and send a picture of an historial painting of one of our ancestors (Antonio Covarrubias) painted in the 16th Century.

The family also held large land grants in California in the Santa Barbara, CA area.
