I have a great great great great grandfather who came yo the U.S.in1763 and died in 1793. his name was daun then changed to Dayan. his son was DR.John Dayan. he had sons that was Quiet famous/. John ferdindand dayan rev. and charles dayan in the ny congresss and judge and lawyer. he came to amsterdam N.Y. I cannot find out who he is . Fe came from Austria and i believe was one of the count Leopold Von Daun. field marshall in the 7 yr. war. if any one can help please contact me. I also have a family tree on ancestry. the Dayan faamily tree.

Some interesting information that carries through our family. Our family ancestry surname is "dawn". They have spelled it Daun at times and there are stories that the name was "Von Daun". We also have the Ferdinand name in our line. I wonder if our families connect. Just thought I would forward this information, as your research may lie in "Dawn". Our Dawns are in Virginia, TN, Ark, and GA.

I finally got your reply.. glad to help. Who was the mother of Dr. John Dayan (Daun) and George/Charles Dayan (Daun)? I have not found her. According to Congressman George Dayan's words, his father died a few months after he was born and left the wife and children destitute. The unknown wife died, and the boys were raised separately by the friends and neighbors,one son, Dr. John, was Catholic or Dutch Reformed and baby Charles was raised Episcopal. Charles went to college, became a judge, knew Andrew Jackson, joined a Mason Lodge, became a U.S. Congressman for New York. The Mason's had his autobiography. Further it does not help with the father altering his name Karl Dayan (Charles Dayan). Looking at the Daun line from Europe www.geni.com, by process of elimination, Karl was either 6 when he came in 1780 or 62. Still trying to figure out how he was connected to this royal line. It appears with Empress Marie passing they fell out of favor and had to exit for America. The Daun (Dayan) line clearly documented in many Historical books in America and from the Pittsburgh Univ. archive. I have the line listed in www.geni.com under, Mary K.
