I too am researching the Gillis family. My leg of the family is found in Orleans County, NY. I am having a difficult time tracking a Cornelius Gillis b-1798 in Saratoga, NY. Anyone with any info on this branch of the Gillis clan would be appreciate. I am also more than willing to give up on the extensive census records and burial information on this arm of the family.

I
I know that there were many Gillises in NY. Some of my family lived in Victor NY. But they came here in 1695 and I do not have all of their names. If you could send me the names of the two following generations I may be able to help you. But your information does not give me much to work with.

Exactly what information are you looking for? Your father was one of sixteen children (8 boys 8 girls). He spent time in the service, did farming, and also before his retirement, he worked for Harrison Radiator in Lockport, N.Y.

I am replying to your message in 2000 on Victor NY relatives. I have a Levi D Gillis that I can't find parents for he was born in Victor in 1800. His name may possibly been Levin but not sure. Any help would be appreciated! Daryl Judith Davis-Fields

I hope this message finds you after so many years and that you can make use of it.

John D Gillis, son of Robert and Jerusha Gillis, b. 2 August 1779 in Hebron, Washington Co., NY, married Mary Ann Smith, b. Ireland about 1797. They lived for a time in Washington Co., NY, then moved to Victor, Ontario Co., NY.

It's important to note that Mary Ann had at least three siblings; Rosannah, b Ireland 1791; Michael, b. NY 1800; Edward O, b. NY 1808. Edward O was an early pioneer accredited as one of the first settlers of Eaton Co., MI and its possible that this is why the Smiths and Gillis' removed to Western NY. Michael and his family lived in Shelby, Orleans Co., NY; Rosannah married Levi S Bishop and later in life moved their family from Saratoga Co., NY to Victor, Ontario Co., NY.

Letters were exchanged between the Gillis, Smith and Bishop families proving a close relationship throughout the years. From my understanding, the Gillis' remained primarily in Ontario Co., NY, but spread throughout Western NY into Monroe, Livingston and Orleans counties as well. I don't know much about any of them before settling in Western NY, as records are scarce from that early period.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I'd be very interested in making a connection with you concerning these families. email: lilzimm84@yahoo.com
