Does anyone know about Leahneah's nationality? One of her sons was Thomas Halberstadt who married Mary Ann Jones. Thomas and Mary Ann had a daughter name Lana Josephine. This was my mother's grandmother. She said she was half Indian. So was Mary Ann Jones the full blooded Indian. Could use some help on this. I was always told that she was Cherokee.

Pat,
I am looking in my book by Francis Lipp on the Halberstadts. While his book has a number of inaccuracies he did do us a service with all the information he researched. Here is what he said about Leahneah's family
"I could have found out the Father and Mother of Leah if I had looked harder for them. By the tax records and the census I have her born in Penn. which I feel is right. Her Dad could have been James Kentley and I expect they lived in Franklin Co., Ind. at the time of her marriage to Thomas. By the 1820 Census there was an older couple living with them. I expect it was her Father and Mother. Thomas was a Farmer and he moved to Sullivan Co., Ind. about the same time as the other members of his family did (1850)."
Mr. Lipp has Thomas Halberstadt's birthplace as Hunterdon Co., N.J.-born 6/7/1789 amd died 11/17/1857.
Leahneah was born in Penn. 11/15/1794 and died 12/21/1869.
Both Thomas and Leahneah are buried in Ebenezer Cemetery in Sullivan Co., IN
Does this match your information--except for the father of Leahneah?

Pat. - I got all my information from Francis Lipp's book also, which shows her father as James Kentley. I noticed in your mail that Mary Ann is your relative - Her brother William Henry is my g g grandfather. I have been searching for our Indian ancestor for a long time. My daddy told me that her name was Laura Broken Bow and that she was given a section of land in Oklahoma. Do you have any more information on her?

Pat, I made a mistake in typing the name John instead of James, as the father of Leahneah.

Pat,
Thanks for your info on Leahneah's brother. Just one more piece of information to fit in the puzzle. Tentatively I am putting James Kentley as the father of Leahneah so I can put your g-g-grandfather as her brother. Then when I search I will have two people to check against. I have never heard anything about Laura Broken Bow but that is an interesting piece of information. Did your Dad ever mention that they were Cherokee? I have no more information on Leahneah other than her name.

Pat,
I noticed that there was a William Henry Halberstadt bo. Dec. 22,1839 d. Mar 25, 1863 listed as a child of Leahneah Kentley and Thomas Halberstadt. Is this your g-g-grandfather or did Leahneah have a brother by that name?

Hi Pat - William Henry Halberstadt born 12/22/1839 was my grandmother's grandfather. Her name was Nancy Ellen Halberstadt. His parents were Thomas Halberstadt and Leahneah Kentley Halberstadt, My grandmother's parents were John Thomas and Nancy J. Godwin. William Henry married Elizabeth Manwarring. My daddy said we were part Cherokee. I think she was on the Trail of Tears and changed her name I have been hunting her for a long time.

Thanks for setting me straight on where William Henry fits into the picture. Also, your family history that Leahneah was part Cherokee fits in what what my mother told me. Leahneah had a son, Thomas who married Mary Ann Jones. There daughter, Lana Josephine Halberstadt married James Wesley Marratta. My mother remembers going over to James and Laney's house and it was filled with so much smoke you couldn't see. They both smoked corncob pipes. They often had groups of Indians who would stop by their house asking for food or clothing.
I had always thought that the Cherokee side came from Mary Ann Jones side. It looks like it was Leahneah's side now. What do you think?
