I'm hoping that this message will put me in touch with anyone whose JANOSKO ancestors were from the area near Svidnik and Bardejov in northern Slovakia (near the border with Poland).

I am also researching other families of that area, who are related to my ancestors. If anyone can help, please E-mail me directly at MariannePetruska@aol.com.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

My grandmothers name was Mary Janosko, married to Andrew (from Russian Slovakia) her Fathers name was Scerbak from Andrejovka, somewhere in Slovakia close to the border near Hungary/Poland & Russia. The spelling could be off a little. Do these names sound familiar to you? They came over to Ellis Island around 1908.

I will check my spreadsheet and get back to you with the info. Andrejova is near the area my ancestors were from and I believe there was a family by that name in one of the villages of my ancestors.

CHERYL: Sorry for the delay in replying. Haven't been doing much researching lately as I've had to deal with some health issues.

Will try to post another reply re: any Janosko families from Jurkova Vola & Vysny Orlik & Vysny Mirosov later this week.

My father was from Yaklovce, Austria (don't know exactly where that is), but his name was Andrew Stephen Janosko. His parents were Michael Janosko and Martha (Maria Falat) Janosko. He came to Ellis Island in October 1911. Don't know if there is any relation, but thought I would answer your e-mail. There are also Janosko's in Charleroi, Pa., some of which have died. They may also be a relation. Stephen Janosko died, but was married to Anna. He also had a sister who was married to Michael Papson.

Hi,

My father's father was born in Andrejovka. My father and I went there about 8 years ago and found the widow of his first cousin.
She recognized my dad immediately because she said that he looks just like his uncle.

Hi,

I was wondering if you could help me trace my father’s paternal family tree. My father, Ernest (Aaron) Scerbak, was born in 1929. I don’t know his father’s first name (I can probably get it). His mother was the former Gowlick.

He was from Andrejovka. My father and I visited there about ten years ago. We met his first cousin’s widow who said he was a dead ringer for his uncle (dad did not know he had an uncle).

My grandfather married twice in the States, and from what I understood from our Slovakian relatives seemed to have had a relationship of some sort with a woman in Slovakia with whom I believe he may have had children. He did cross the ocean at least twice.

My family settled in Garfield, NJ. I cannot figure out where my father’s maternal family is from. My grandmother, Anna, had a sister. I believe that my grandmother was born here and her sister was born in Slovakia. There are records of them entering the country without their father, so I really cannot figure out who he was.

That is pretty much all I know. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
