I have traced my tree back to this family of Goldsmith's and cannot find any other info on them at all to indicate where they came from or went to. Apart from the one member that leads to me that is! They are on the 1861 census in Liverpool at 15 gloucester st. It states that they are from Holland and all the men work in the tobacco trade. The father Hostoch is a traveller in the trade and his sons are cigar makers.
Hostoch Goldsmith-m-head-52 (c1809)-taveller in tobacco trade-Holland.
Morris Goldsmith-m-son-29 (c1832)-cigar maker-Holland.
Rachel Goldsmith-m-DinL-29 (c1832)-Holland.
Nehemiah Hartog Goldsmith-u-son-26 (c1835)-cigar maker-Holland.
Jonas Goldsmith-u-son-23 (c1838)-cigar maker-Holland.
Isaac Goldsmith-u-son-17 (1844)-cigar maker-Holland.
Maria Goldsmith-u-Daugh-13 (c1848)-scholar-Holland.
Sarah goldsmith-Grandaughter-u-4 (1857)-Liverpool, Lancashire.
Henry Goldsmith-Grandson-u-2 (1859)-Liverpool, Lancashire.

Any help or information is very gratefuly accepted,
Marie.

Perhaps this could be a connection, though the names are likely common. My greatgrandfather's name was Isaac Nathan Goldsmith, born in 1858. His parents were Nathan Goldsmith (1834-1898) and Hannah Van de Kar (1829-1918), both from Holland. They immigrated in 1858 to Boston, Massachusetts. We have no information on their parents or siblings.
Isaac was a cigar manufacturer (Goldsmith & Silver Co.) in Boston in the late 1800s under the brandname MCA. So he was definitely in the tobacco trade. We do not know if his father, Nathan, was also in the trade.
My cousin and I are continuously searching for further information on our Goldsmith family history. Please respond if you think there may be a connection.

I am also searching an Isaac Goldsmith who was a successful Cigar dealer in Easton, Pennsylvania. He is first found in Easton in 1860 census records, noting his profession as "tobacconist." He married a Henrietta Weil and after an apparent service in the Civil War, resumed a very successful cigar business. There is much information available about him and his business.

It does not appear that he ever practiced in Boston.

I just read your post 2 years later.
My gr gr grandfather was Isaac Goldsmith married to Sarah Van Volen, both from Holland and came to US around 1860. They loved on Dover St next door to your gr gr grandfather Nathan and Hannah. My gr gr grandfather was a Cigar maker. Possibly there is a connection here. I was interested to hear about the name of the company, as all I was told was that he owned a cigar company and they were well off with servants, which the 1870 and 1860 census also show.
It is interesting that my maiden name is also Murphy.
I would be interested in knowing if there is a connection.

According to census record, the Isaac Goldsmith I am seeking was born in Baden Germany in 1870 so it sounds like your search if for a different Isaac Goldsmith. My Isaac Goldsmith settled in Easton Pennsylvania, married Henrietta Weil and died in 1906.

Although my Isaac also had a tobacco business, it doesn't appear that he is the same Isaac that you seek. If you have additional information that might indicate that there was a relationship, you can reach me at jsgran@erols.com.

In my search I have found other Isaac Goldsmiths who were also in the cigar or tobacco business that do not appear related. One in particular, I remember, was in Chicago.
