James Richard GARGAN - Portland from 1904 to 1924

Classification: Query
Surnames: GARGAN
Phone directories list James Richard Gargan as living in Portland from 1904 to 1924, working as a Painter/Decorator but I'm having great difficulty finding him in the 1910 or 1920 census.

I'm trying to confirm his birth year to know if he's the same James Richard Gargan who lived in Dedham, MA in 1900. The family split up just months after the census and I'm hoping to find out what happened to him.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Frances Ellen Hyndman had remarried and was likely back in Canada by the time of the USA Census 1910. James Richard Gargan may have remarried and kept some of the children with him for a time but indications are struggled to support them.

Sorry if you already have the births but, I like to be able to confirm - there is no sign of either Frances or James after the 1900 census (on census) but, regretfully I cannot find deaths for either

Thank you for the information. Frances Ellen Hyndman left the family and remarried in 1901 (claiming it was her first) and again in 1909. She died in 1950.

James Richard Gargan "appears" to have lived beyond 1900 IF a 1910 or 1920 census of Portland can confirm with dates. As I've dug deeper, the family certainly appeared to have split up in late 1900 or early 1901. I've been trying to find out if it was caused by separation or if James Richard Gargan died.

Thank you for the probate record on Dora.

"Probate" would indicate one of the parents died & if Frances re-married then... likely he passed before 1904 - not sure where you would get the record from tho...

At this point, I'm not sure in James Richard Gargan actually died between 1900 and 1904 or if he abandoned the family as Frances Ellen Hyndman did by 1901. Seeking closure for my relatives who are directly related. They are glad to know Dora was adopted in 1904 as she was named after Frances' sister.

Are adoption records sealed permanently or is it possible to access them after 100 years as with some other birth records?
