Is there anyone here that knows alot on John Wilkes Booths extended family?

If so. . .

I am searching for information on my Great Great Grandfather Milton Bentley Purdy b 29 Aug 1833 d 10 Nov 1925. I have storys or reports that he lived at the same place as JWB for a little while, but my question is more about JWB sister (I don't have a name). Along with living with JWB I am told that he, MBPurdy, worked for a sister of JWB digging for oil.
Is anyone aware of a sister of JWB that was in such a business in anyway and if so could you tell me where and when? Or if you have any information on MBPurdy.

Thank-you.

I saw a book in our local library yesterday about John Wilkes Booth and one of his brothers, "Good Brother, Bad Brother" by James Cross Giblin. Maybe it has some information that would help you out. I did pick it up and thumb through it, since my husband's Booths came from South Carolina in abt 1800, to see if there was a tie in and it said JWB's dad came over from England in the 1830's. (At least that's what I think I saw.) Anyway, might be a good reference for anybody wanting to learn about his family.

HI, I amm also related to Booths from South Carolina. Is your Booth related to a James Booth born about 1776 in SC? THis is my ancestor. If so, would like to exchange info with you. I also heard family stories about kinship with John Wilkes Booth. Thanks, Nellie Harrington(Booth).

Here are a few websites that I have found interesting regarding J.W. Booth and family...
My grandfather stated we were distant cousins of J.W. Booth and my greatuncle's name was John Wilkes Booth... He went by John .W. all his life including his tombstone inscription :)

John Wilkes Booth was born on a farm near Bel Air, Maryland, about 25 miles from Baltimore. His birth date was May 10, 1838. He was the 9th of 10 children of Junius Booth and Mary Ann Holmes. John's parents were British and had moved to the United States in 1821. In addition to the farm at Bel Air (where the Booth family had slaves), the family also owned a home on North Exeter Street in Baltimore where the colder months of the year were spent. Junius was one of the most famous actors on the American stage although he was an eccentric personality who had problems with alcohol and spells of madness.

Booth was named after the British radical John Wilkes, who the family claimed was a distant relative. In the Booth family, there was historical precedent for children being named after statesmen and assassins. Junius Booth was named after Marcus Junius Brutus, one of the assassins of Julius Caesar.
John's brother, Edwin, was, arguably, the most influential Shakespearean actor of his day; Lincoln saw him in four plays in eight weeks in 1864. Another brother, Junius Brutus Booth, Jr. followed his father and uncles into acting. He was married to the former Marion Agnes Land Rookes, a native Australian.

In 1851, at age 13, Booth attended St. Timothy's Military Academy in Catonsville, near Baltimore, Maryland. It was there that Booth met two men named Samuel Arnold and Michael O'Laughlen, both of whom would later become his co-conspirators. (Info from Wikipedia)

If I am not mistaken I believe it was his sister Asia Sidney that would have been involved. JWB is related to me somehow and I am trying to find out how at this time.

I have been working on the issue that John Brown stayed at the Booth Kennedy's farm before he attacked Harpers Ferry. The Booth Kennedy farm is about 2 miles from Harpers Ferry. I have the Booth, Brown and Cox families buried together at Mckeesport PA about 100 ft from the Kennedy's.

McKeesport PA near Pittsburgh is named afer John McKee a ferry boat builder. What makes me think I have something here is a have a reference that these boat families are related to Robert E Lee and Jeb Brown Stewart somehow. That John Wilkes Booth was at John Browns hanging and that John Brown is buried near the Mcintyre Range at Lake Placid. A Dye Thompson is running the McIntyre Iron Works there at Lake Placid. Some Thompsons were killed at Harpers Ferry and they are also buried at Lake Placid with John Brown. The McIntyres are buried 20 ft from the Booth, Brown, Cox families at Mckeesport and about another 20 ft from John McKee the founder of Mckeesport, who ran McKee's Ferry.

I sure do have alot of coincidences here plus more I have not said anyting about.

I just wanted to add that there seems to be a second Booth line working on Showboats out of Pittsburgh. They are connected to Lewis and Clark. Meriwether Lewis's partner William Clark had a sister named Ann Clark who married Owen Gwathmey. Their daughter married William Booth son of William Aylett Booth and Rebecca Hite. William Clark's brother, General Jonathan Clark, married Sara Hite. Both Rebecca and Sara Hite are daughters of Explorer Joshua Hite of Bedford. These families have a connection to Col John Singleton Mosby. Lewis Thornton Powell was in John Mosby's unit. John Mosby's brother William Harrison Mosby is married to Lucy Booth daughter of Henry Booth. The Booth Harrison and Cox familys are buried together in Pittsburgh. The Mosbys and Singletons are also in the same graveyard. The Aylett family is related to General Robert E Lee.
