I'm not sure if this is of any help or if it is too late but here goes :

My father's middle name was Vanderhorst (1909-2001).

His father was Frank Edwin Theodore Hyder (1869-1947).

His grandmother was Julia Harriet Mansel Selfe.

Her husband was William Theodore Jarvis Hyder (1832-1917).

I have other information regarding Shewen and Selfe compiled by a cousin of my father.

Let me know if this is of interest.

Hello Julia,

I am interested in the Vanderhorst family.

I am researching John Rees (1781-1843) of Cilymaenllwyd, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, UK, who married Anne Catherine Vanderhorst at St Mary's Church Swansea in 1803. I am trying to trace their children.

To date I have
Harriet Cooper Rees born 1804 died 1823
John Hughes Rees born 1806
Charles Cooper Rees died 16 months old 1809
Daughter born 1809
Charles Courtney Rees born 1810 married Rosa Caroline Shewen, Rosa died 1840
Anna Mansel Rees born 1811 died 1875
Frances Mansel Rees born 1813
Arthur Augustus Rees born 1815 Clerk in Holy Orders
Helen Marian Rees born 1817

Thanks for your reply.

I'm actually looking for a connection to Nicolaus van der Horst (1598-1646) from this gentleman :-

Johannis van der Horst (aka Johannes and John) 1662 - 1717. Born Holland, arr. USA before 1694, because he married in 1685 Marie van der Loo in Charleston, SC.

Johannis, I believe, was probably the first Vanderhorst to arrive in USA from Europe and died in Charleston, SC. It is probable that he "changed" his name to Vanderhorst rather than van der Horst as he did his first name to John. Possibly to integrate into life in Charleston ?

Nicolaus, he was an artist, was born in Antwerp and died in Brussels.

There's at least one generation that I'm searching for, in fact I don't even know if these 2 people are connected.

Johannis would be my 7x great grandfather.

Hello Neil

Sorry I am not able to help with a connection to Nicholaus van der Horst.

My connection with the family is that Elias Honorius Vanderhorst was the father in law of John Rees of Cilymaenllwyd, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire South Wales and the name Vanderhorst was given to his grandson John Vanderhorst Rees who was a military man who lived at the Royal Military Hospital Chelsea.

Am I correct in thinking that you are descended from Harriet Cooper Vanderhorst who married Henry Thomas Shewen at St Mary's Parish Church Swansea?

Benita

Hello Neil

Thank you for confirming that Harriet was your relative, she was the sister-in-law of the man I am researching, John Rees of Cilymaenllwyd.

Anne Catherine was the daughter of Elias and Mary Raven Cooper.
Elias was the American Consul to the Port of Bristol and also owned during his stay in Bristol, Fonmon Castle in Lantwit-Major.
