Hi Linda -- First, I do not have an answer to your question. Second, I have been trying to trace the life of Rev. James Keyte, founder of Keytesville and Brunswick. In picking up the odd bits I found the following in an Index called, The Guide to Mormon War Papers 1838-1841, which are held by the Missouri State Archives. Document #18 referenced within Archives Information Bulletin, Vol. II, No. 4, October, 1980, has by way of synopsis, the following 1 September 1838 proceeding, "Daniel Ashby, James Keyte, Sterling Price, Brunswick, Missouri, to Governor Boggs, Jefferson City, Missouri. States a concern over a scheme of the Mormons to use the Indians to "work general destruction of all that is not Mormon", and contains a statement by an ex-Mormon, Nathan Marsh, confirming their fears of this plan. The signers suggest issuing orders to the miltia in case of emergency.

Now, what can you tell me about Rev. Keyte?

According to Lee Fleming Reese's "The Ashby Book," (1976), Maj. Daniel ASHBY died in Forest Green, Mo, on either Oct. 11 or Nov. 12, 1878. Forest Green is in the southeast corner of Chariton Co. and very near the northwest border of Howard Co. She doesn't indicate where ASHBY was buried.

Thanks to several people who saw my original message I have found out the following information: Major Daniel Ashby (son of Henry & Judith A. SHUMATE ASHBY), was born Oct 11 1791, Fauquier Co, VA; died Oct 11 1878 in Chariton Co, MO and is buried at the Old Ashby Cemetery in Chariton Co. He was appointed Receiver of the United States Land Office at Lexington and he then moved with this office to Clinton, Henry Co. sometime between 1840 and 1845, where he lived until about 1869 when he moved back to Chariton Co. Daniel was married four times: Feb 28 1814, Hopkins Co, KY to Cassandra A. Leeper; Feb 22 1849, Chariton Co, MO to Frances Dillingham; Jul 14 1863, Chariton Co, MO to Henrietta Bull; and Oct 13 1869 to Idress E. Craig. The first three wives are buried in Clinton, MO at the old Oak Grove Cemetery. His forth wife Idress, was buried alongside him at the Old Ashby Cemetery in Chariton Co. I know of only two children by his first wife, William Harrison Ashby (1825-1860), and Spencer P. Ashby (born abt 1832) who married Maria Bruce. He also raised Rachel Harris who married Dr. John Henry Royston of Henry Co. If anyone knows more about the children of Major Daniel Ashby, I would appreciate the information. Thanks to everyone for all the help.

All known cemeterys in Chariton County were cataloged and put in book form by May Couch, Marceline, Mo. in 1985. The Old Ashby cemetery is included in these books. You will note that only the persons who had stones were included in these books unless there were old indexes available. If this is so then the information is clearly stated in the books.
