Surnames: WEISZ, STERN
I am researching the Weisz family of the town Prievidza (Priwitz), in Nyitra region of former Hungary (now Slovakia). Locations of interest also include Trnava, Budapest, Bratislava, and Kremnica.
There were several siblings, including Ferdinand, Pishtah, Geza, Olga, Gustave, Sandor, Eva, and Bela/Vojtech. Most of the siblings came to America at the turn of the last century, mostly setting up households in or around New York City. Their parents' names were Helene/Linette Stern and Herman Weisz. If any of these names are familiar, please contact me!

The name sounds a great deal like Podhayce. I'm looking for Weisz from there. Perhaps there's a connection.

The best thing to do is check the name of your town at JewishGen.org in their Shtetlseeker area -- Good luck and see what it turns up!

Surnames: Weisz
My grandparents on my father's side were named WEISZ from Szurte near Ungvar before WWII. Their names were Nathan & Rivka Weisz, 4 sons and 2 daughters. My father was the yongest son who went to the U.S. in 1938. The rest of the family was deported to Auschwitz in 6/1944, there were no survivors.

Does any of these names sound familiar?

Thank You

Stuart

Not related and not researching this surname but I can pass on some websites.
A map of Austria-Hungary :
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
A map of Hungarian megye :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Ung megye to locate city of Ungvar, Hungary (Uzhorod, Czechoslovakia) now Uzghorod, Ukraine. A bit South of Ungvar is Szurte.
A good locator of a town is
www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
The surname WEISZ lists in Slovak Republic.
www.zoznamst.sk
www.adc.sk/english/slovakia/slovak04.htm
You might need to hire a researcher to do the research for you. Some of them are mentioned in this website :

I am researching Samuel/Sam Shayevitz, born in Grodna bet. 1881-1183, who married Anna Berdofsky (who had a sister Ester Bern living with them in 1920-1930) born in Vilna (Vilnius). Sam and Anna had children Abraham, Pauline (both born in Grodna), Morris, Esther and Solomon (these born in CT). Morris married into my husband's maternal family.

Please contact me so we can share info.

Thanks.

Stuart, my husband's Ggrandfather and all his brothers (Ignatz, Samuel, Mendel, Louis (Levi?) and Adolf all migrated from Ungvar to NYC between 1895 and 1911. They came over one by one. I believe the father's name was Hermann (Hyman?) I think a sister Rose remained in Hungary (at the time). I am trying to find their family records in Ungvar and will let you know if there is any family connection.
