OBE Recipients

Can anyone tell me if there is a place I can look up recipients of the OBE? My husband's aunt was awarded (made? received? --how do you say it?) an OBE, and I'd like to find out just when, and for what. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Tom; that's an interesting website, with a good description of the various honors. Unfortunately, it doesn't include a list of recipients. But thank you for your effort.

Anyone receiving such an award will be "Gazetted", there name, honour etc will appear in a supplement to London Gazette published twice a year, Queen's Birthday and New Years Honours lists.

The full archive has been digitised and indexed from 1900 to 1997, with special search facilities for some awards and civilian medals.

Go to http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ click London, then Supplements [for description] or Archive [choose Honours & Awards from drop down menu] to search.

Enjoy

Thanks, Jeff, that's a great resource, as well as a fascinating website, and just what I was looking for! I've read enough British Naval novels to have run across the term "Gazetted," but I never understood the real meaning until now. Sadly, I was unable to find Auntie's record there. Since there is a separate Belfast Gazette and an Edinburgh Gazette, I wonder if there would have been a separate list for Australia (since Auntie Emma Tootell was Australian)? Anybody know?

I thought all Queen's Awards for the UK & Commonwealth were published in the London Gazette. When browsing the lists, I've seen separate supplements for some Commonwealth Countries but not yet for Australia. You could e-mail the Gazette with your question - can't hurt.

I do know that people have reported that the lower awards are not fully indexed and the Gazette search engine sometimes fails to find recipients that have subsequently been found by browsing the pages [just like browsing the PRO fiche]. Although to do that obviously it helps if you can narrow the dates. I don't know if you noticed but being pdf format you can save each issue for searching "off line" later.

Try a web search for "Australian Honours list", it returns 1000's of hits.

It appears since 1975, Australia has had it's own Honours system. The list being published on the Queen's birthday [June] and Australia Day [26 January] and they have both Imperial Honours [eg OBE] and Australian Honours and Awards. Have a look http://www.gg.gov.au/textonly/honours.html and http://www.itsanhonour.gov.au/ and click the ABOUT HONOURS tab on the latter. There are also quite a few links that may be of interest.

Looks like the Sydney Morning Herald publishes the Honours lists.

Hope this helps - good luck

Hey, could you help me out?

I can't seem to access what you have posted here. It seems the website may have been restructured since you posted this link in 04'. Any help is STRONGLY appreciated!
