Hi I am having trouble with a direct ancestors place of birth. Jacob was married 1802 to hannah Alexander and died in London and his census shows he was not born in Britain but doesn't say where he was born. I have found some records that might be him being born in Germany and some where'd he could be from holland. Many people trees are showing him being from holland 1762 but I can't confirm this, intact I can find more evidence that he may be German from various records including a criminal record, and the fact kekenbeker appears to be German in origin. Can anyone who has listed in their tree as Dutch please help and advise where the source of this came from. Many many thanks in advance

Yep, you're exactly right to look for original source material, the majority of trees are total nonsense, which aren't researched properly, or sourced, or confirmed by documentation, just one person importing a bunch of unproven and speculative hokum from another person, which then gets passed on and repeated multiple times.

In the late 17oo's there are only a few countries that required surnames for jews. If you can research them this will narrow down the info for you. From memory off hand i do not think Holland was one of them.
