Giroux seems to be an entirely different family than Gerow - Giraud. There were Giroux's in northern NY with Canadian roots. I would assume that this is the family you seek.

Sergeant Daniel Gerow (1725-1791) saw action in the Revolutionary War on the American side, but his son Daniel (1758-1835) and two of his daughters remained loyal to the Crown and moved to New Brunswick, Canada. I have not followed the Canadian Gerow line, but you might try this line for your family.

The Surname Giroux, is quite commonly taken as GEROW
I have seen various other spellings like Geron, Genoe as well.

If your ancestors are not from the Canadian Gerow line, what is your line of descent from Daniel? Are you related to the Gerows who settled in Plattekill, NY?

This is actually the family of a friend, and I'm helping with her genealogy. She has letters, scrapbooks, and photo albums that provide a huge amount of information on the Gerow family. She is the great-granddaughter of Bessie Gerow.

Line of descent:
Daniel Gerow (1697-1757)
Daniel Gerow (1725-1791)
Elias Gerow (1762-1838)
Daniel Elias Gerow (1791-1873)
Eleazer Baldwin Gerow (1818-1878)
James Crosby Gerow (1844-1918)
Elizabeth "Bessie" Rosilla Gerow (1872-1961)

We have a Gerow Family Association connected with the Huguenot Historical Society in New Paltz, NY. During the 1980's, the Association published a 3-vol. genealogy. I checked it and Eleazer Baldwin Gerow and his son, James Crosby, are listed in the second volume. I don't know if the line continues in the 3rd volume as I do not have that. It is not as good as the other volumes. The 3-vol. set is available for $30 now.

Daniel Gerow and his wife, Elizabeth Coutant, settled in Plattekill, Ulster County, NY, about 1781. Their sons, William, Elias, and John, had moved to Plattekill about 1775 or 1775. I am a descendant of William Gerow. Plattekill is about 15 miles south of New Paltz. The Huguenot Historical Society has some Gerow deeds and wills in their Archives. The HHS website is

The Gerow Family website is http://www.gerowfamily.org
I hope you will tell your friend about the Gerow Family Association.
