GG Grandma Auguste Dorothea Liebenthal- born in Lippehne in 1836. Great difficulty finding history of family, that town, the history of both in that time-the town , the family, what happened and why they left.
Any clues, links or help greatly appreciated.

looking up Prussian history seems like it was an area of great unrest and war.
Check out if it was part of the russian pale of settlement where pogroms were frequent.
Did they emigrate to us or europe.

JewishGen doesn't appear to list that place in its Town Finder (although it turns up in the Gazetteer). German Wikipedia has an article, as does GenWiki (both in German):
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipiany
http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Lippehne
