Any information to a John Spry and wife Elizabeth
(Woodson) Spry who owned 220 acres of land on Carter's
creek.John Spry bought this 220 a. in 1793 from Adam
Brinegar and first appeared on the 1796 Rowan Co. NC Tax
List for Capt. Hinckle's tax list. John Spry probably came
from Kent Co. DE circa 1785 and Queen Anne Co. MD circa
1770. My Francis Marion Spry, born 1793 in Delaware was
probably the son of John Spry and lived in Rowan Co. NC
before moving to Coffee Co. TN in 1836.Allen

I am the grandson of Gerenia Mae Spry b.3/24/1916 in Coffee Co. TN. her parents were John William Spry b.3/25/1881 d.1/26/1949 and Mertie Annie Travis b.11/27/1887 d.1/23/1952, both are buried in Pembroke, KY. John William Spry is the son of James Henderson Spry b.1856 TN d.12/1945 and Rosetta Boyd b.1862 TN d.1947, both are buried in Tullahoma, Coffee, Co., TN. James Henderson Spry is the son of Andrew Jackson "Jack" Spry who was the son of Marion Spry. Is your Francis Marion Spry b.1793 later moved to Coffee Co., Tn 1836 the same person as my Marion Spry (the birth and place of residence look like a match).
Good luck and thanks.

In the 1850 Arkansas Census, Elizabeth Spry 50 years of age and two children are listed. One child born in North Carolina and One child was born in Tennessee. In same county, a Woodson Spry 18 years of age and born in Tennessee is also listed.

My Spry family moved to Arkansas but I don't find a connection to this woman. Thought you'd be interested.

My grandfather was George W. Spry don't know his middle name, though, very interested in finding it out. George W. had a son name John A. Spry, again would love to know the middle name, he was from the second marriage with Rebecca Parker-Spry, He moved to Savannah, Tn. around 1900. and married Nila Thompson. They had three children Norman, Burtha, and George-(my grandfather) John A. Spry born 1878 died on Sept, 27th, 1905 in Olive Hill, TN. Norman died on holloween night in the 1930's never married with no children. Burtha married and moved to Detroit. Now, George O. Spry never knew his father nor his grandfather George W. Spry he, I believe died around 1909. Nila remaried in 1907 to Allen Rose, and George never knew much about his relatives in Woodburry, TN. I do know that he visited his uncle a few times in woodburry, TN.

Now to my question....
John Spry arrived in America in 1739 could he be this John Spry of Delaware and if not where did he go? and what about all these other spry's.....

On the 1820 census there are 2 people in this category and they are not slaves- "number of people not naturalized no citizens"

Do you have any information on Catharine Spry born About 1770. She is on the Davie County census in 1860 with Lemuel and a Sarah Spry. Any help would be appreciated.

Catharine's son was Lemuel.
I found info on Ancestry.com that Catharine Spry was born 1780 NC, died April, 1860 Davie Co NC age 80 years old.
No husband in HH that year.
Children there;
James, with question mark as far as I am concerned due to age.
Enoch / John/ Lemuel/ William/ Daniel/ amd James Chivans. All born between 1813-1821 except James.
***
Might be her Wm.?
1850 Davie Co NC HH 797
William Spry, age 32 b NC
Elizabeth age 35. Thomas Butler 12, Ann Butler 10, John Butler 9, Margaret 7.//
**
North Carolina Marriages;
Enoch Spry, married Mary Lingle on 1 Sept, 1852 at Rowan Co NC. [ was also Davie Co at one time].
***************
Since I am retired and have the time, I traced on Ancestry.com info to see what I could find about your Catharine and husband. It seems her husband was probably named John Spry?
Anyway, this line went back with below data:
John Spry 1790-1840 married Elizabeth Fuller
John Spry 1751-1836, married Elizabeth Woodson b.1764-___. Elizabeth was d/o Richard Woodson and Sarah Chiffens.
John Spry b 1722 married Mary Massey
Francis Spry married Rebecca ___________.
Christopher Spry 1631 England, 1707 USA married Mary Henson 1665-___.
When time allows you might play with them names and consider the dates close rather than actual and see if you can connect to your line.

Dear Virginia, Thank You so much for your response. I have another question. There is a Sarah with Catharine on the 1850 Davie county census. Could she be a daughter?, daughter in law? That is a big mystery in my Jones family research. Thanks again. Norma

I am sorry that I cannot identify Sarah Spry who was living in Catharine Spry's HH in 1850 census. It is likely she was a dau. of Catharine's with mother being age 40 at her birth.
Samuel born 1823 is a problem being her son born at age 50.
Samuel is too young to be a son of Sarah's...I hope!at age 13 at his birth.
This census brings lots of problems for identity.Samuel is too young to be father of the three listed under him in this census at ages of 13, 10 and 8. Surely they are grandchildren of Catharine and her late husband who was prob. John Spry born 1770 in Delaware.
I was not able to locate these children on later censuses but may have given up too soon. Maybe a trip to the family history center of your local Latter Day Saints Church will be very helpful to you. The volunteers in their Family History Center are great and free. Costs are very reasonable to order copies of anything you may need. Look in your phone book for the church and call and ask where their nearest church with a family history center is and the hours it is open. Ginny K.

THANK YOU VIRGINIA!!! You have been a great help. Sarah, in the 1850 has no last name so you would guess that she was a spry. WELL, Her son Mathew is my great grandfather, Martin and Catharine are her children too. My family have always said that Drury Jones was Mathew's father and his mother was Sarah. Looked for several years with no success. Through an act of GOD I found Drury and HIS wife in Alabama in the 1850 census. He went there in the 1840's with 4 children and had one while there. I find no marriage record. Do you think. as they say today...they were having a long time affair going on...or, was Sarah His sister. She is a Jones in the 1860 census. Its either a mystery or something that has jumped out of the closet. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!!!!!!! Thanks, Norma

Dear Virginia, I found that Sarah Spry had 2 more children, Emily and Frances -- Emily born 1863 and Frances born 1867. Sarah died in 1876 and the 2 children were given a guardian. Her 34 acres were sold for $150. I have looked and don't find records for Emily or Frances. ANY suggestions?

Thanks, Norma
