UK Searching pre 1841

Hi

I'm looking for help in how to go about tracing my family before the initial 1841 Census. For example, I have a relation who was apparently born in a local town in 1811. If I want to find out who his parents were and back further do I need to visit every church in the town and hope to strike lucky with a christening record? Or is there a more efficient and generally accepted method to trace such people and their ancestors?

Sorry if it's a daft question but this is fairly new to me.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

I've been a bit disappointed by the lack of response too - maybe I posted the message in the wrong place.

Thanks for your help though - much appreciated.

Hello Moggyman,

Before Census returns, the best way is to check through the parish records for the established church of your ancestors. You can follow these back to the early 1500s. To go back further there are Wills, Hearth Taxes and many more ways to track people down in the UK :)

The firs thing you need is where where they in 1841, were they in the county of their birth? If not check the 1851 and to see where they give their birthplace.

Their are parish record look up exchanges for many of the British counties.
