Looking for information on Hicksay Talbot, wife of Wade Hezikiah Pugh, my great grandfather born in Pike county about 1826. Do not know when Hicksay was born but estimate about 1830. Have found mention of a Talbot's Mill but no other information. All of the surnames listed were in Pike County Alabama during the 1800's beginning about 1825. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

PUGH of Pike Co., AL

Classification: Query
Surnames: PUGH, CORBETT, WIGGINS, BLACKBURN, HINSON, STINSON, OWEN
Wade H. PUGH was a son of Burrell PUGH (1799 SC--1855 Pike Co., AL) and wife Barbara. Burrell was a son of Jesse PUGH (ca 1774 VA--ca 1852 Pike Co., AL) and wife Lydia.

I'm interested in this PUGH family because I believe one of the daughters of my 3-gts-grandfather, Alexander CAMPBELL, married into the family.

When Alexander died in 1853, his son Hugh CAMPBELL was appointed admr. of his father's estate, and one of his securities who guaranteed his administrator's bond was Ira E. PUGH. Published Pike Co. marriages show these PUGH marriages, among others:

Ira PUGH & Sarah CAMPBELL 22 June 1852
Ira E. PUGH & Susan BARNHILL 28 Dec 1858

Assuming this is the same Ira PUGH, he appears in 1850 Pike Co. census like this:

p. 139, #61
Ira E. PUGH............50 SC
Elisabeth.................48 SC
John........................22 AL
Emaline...................19 AL
Rebecca.................17 AL
Liddy.......................13 AL
Albert......................10 AL
Elisabeth.................07 AL

Buried at Beulah Cemetery in Troy:
Elizabeth PUGH
born 21 June 1802 died 8 July 1851
aged 49 yrs, 17 days
wife of Ira E. PUGH

The will of Jesse PUGH was abstracted in the Pike Co.Historical Society Publications, vol. 18, p.14. The will was dated 24 Mar 1852 (no probate date was recorded). Jesse names his wife Lydia; sons Mastin B., Burrell, Ira, and Louis PUGH; widowed daughter Malinda STINSON; deceased daughter Elizabeth (no last name listed) whose children were Jesse, Louis, John, Emeline, Rebecca, Lydia, Albert Dowering, and Betty; deceased daughter Polly Ann WIGGINS, whose children were Lydia, Jane, Rhoda, Margaret, Martha, Jesse Harrison, and Mastin WIGGINS; daughter Adeline, wife of Stephen BLACKBURN.

Notice that Elizabeth and her children as named in Jesse's will were obviously the Elizabeth and children with Ira E. PUGH in 1850!

Until I saw this will abstract (I hope it's accurate!), I assumed that all the Pike Co. PUGH family probably came from Jesse (b. ca 1774 VA) and his wife Lydia (b. ca 1776 VA), who were living there in 1850.

BUT--If Elizabeth was their daughter, there MUST have been another PUGH family there, as Elizabeth's husband was Ira E. PUGH. Furthermore, Jesse's will names one of his sons as Ira, also--were there two Ira's? When looking for Ira E. in 1860 (to see if he and Sarah CAMPBELL had any children), I noticed another Ira PUGH in Lowndes Co., but didn't copy the data as he was obviously not the Ira I was looking for. Was the Lowndes Co. Ira perhaps Jesse's son? Where was Ira E. PUGH (b. ca 1800 SC) in 1860?

According to Jesse's will and data from census records, he had this family:

Mastin B. PUGH b. ca 1795 SC (in Arkansas 1860)
m. Charlotte _______ (b. 1815 NC)

Burrell PUGH b. ca 1799 SC d. 1855 Pike Co., AL
m. Barbara _______ (b. ca 1802 NC)

Elizabeth PUGH b. 21 June 1802 SC d. 8 July 1851
m. ca 1821: Ira E. PUGH (b. ca 1800 SC)

Ira PUGH b. ? [known only from father's will]

Malinda PUGH b. ? [known only from father's will]
m. _______ STINSON

Polly Ann PUGH b. ? [known only from father's will]
m. _______ WIGGINS

Lewis PUGH b. ca 1814 TN
m. 1838: Kerrenhappuck CORBETT

Adaline PUGH b. ca 1818 TN
m. 1839: Stephen S. BLACKBURN

To me, this indicates that these other PUGH's in Pike Co. did NOT belong to Jesse & Lydia:

Ira E. PUGH (b. ca 1800 SC) who married ca 1821 their daughter Elizabeth (1802-1851), and then in 1852 married Sarah CAMPBELL, and perhaps in 1858 Susan BARNHILL.

Albert PUGH (b. ca 1818 TN) who married in 1837 Martha CORBETT, sister of Kerrenhappuck who married Lewis PUGH, Jesse's son. Neither Albert nor his children are mentioned in Jesse's will.

Martha Ann PUGH married William HINSON 14 Dec 1839 Pike Co.--unless she's the "Melinda STINSON" mentioned in Jesse's will, she either didn't belong to him or died without issue before 1852.

Suphona (Sophronia?) PUGH married John G. OWEN 21 Feb 1843 Pike Co.---if of "normal" age, she was probably born ca 1825, probably too late to belong to Lydia (b. ca 1776). Whose was she?

This family is a puzzlement to me--I hope you can try to straighten me out!

Best regards,

Ron Head (Montgomery, AL)

1. MASTIN ASBURY1 HINSON was born 18 Mar 1843 in Pike Co., AL, and died 15 Jul 1932 in Limestone Co., TX. He married LUCINDA RUSHING 5 Oct 1865 in Pike Co., AL, daughter of
WILLIAM RUSHING and MARY RUSHING.

Notes for MASTIN ASBURY HINSON:

Asbury served with the 18th Regiment of the Alabama Volunteers, Company H, during the Civil War from 29 Jul 1861 until Jun 1865. He was paroled a Sergeant 8 Jun1865. Asbury was wounded in both legs when he was shot from his horse. His Civil War records indicate that he appeared on the
Hospital Muster Roll, Cairsn Hospital, Columbus, Georgia 31 October 1864.

Asbury was described as being five feet seven inches tall with black hair, grey eyes and dark complexion. Asbury was a prominent citizen in Pike County, AL, owning farm land and parternship in a grist mill and cotton gin. He was a member of the Beulah Primitive Baptist Church and served as Clerk of the church from 1902-1904.

On 4 February 1882, Mastin A. Hinson, was appointed guardian of Lizzie and Minnie, the two minor children of William Cain and Mary (French) Rushing. Lizzie and Minnie were living in Pike County with their mother.

In 1904 Asbury and Lucinda sold their property in Pike County. They started west, going first to Quitman, Wood County, Texas. Asbury's brother had migrated to Texas prior to 1880 and lived in Pleasant Grove, Wood County, Texas.

From Wood County, Asbury moved to Limestone County, living first at Tehuacana about 1905. From there they went to Watt, Texas, where Asbury had a grocery store and then to Prairie Hill, Texas, where he had a store.(1)

Quitman, Wood County, Texas.

Hi Ronald

I just read your response about the Pugh, Hinson and Rushing families and was struck by the similarities to my own family . I wonder if you have any information about the relationships. My grandmother was Samantha Spivey Raley, the daughter of William Spivey and Viney Fowler of Pike County. She married Thomas Ervin Raley from Wood County, TX. Samantha's brother was Ervin Spivey who married Carrie Hinson (I think). They moved to the Kilgore, TX area and had several children including twins. Another of Samantha's brothers, Callie, moved to Prairie Hill, TX. His wife's name was Mae, but I don't know the family name.

According to the 1880 Census, William Spivey Jr., 31 (Goshen Hill, Pike County)
Viney A. 26
Ervin 8
Samantha 7
Lula 5
Fanny 4
Era A 5 mo (She died young)
The 1900 Census for the family:
William 53
Viney 44
Mandy 18
Charlie C (Callie) 16
Donie 12
Bessie 9
Asbury 3
Rufus 2

Asbury died in Texas as a young man. Several of the sisters stayed in Alabama.

As you see, there are many names in common as well as locations. If you have any linking information, I would very much appreciate it.
Thanks, Sandra Dickson Harris

Arthur's father Samuel Pugh married Arthur's mother Mary Adeline McCorkle in 1885.

Samuel's father Gordon Pugh married Samuel's mother Jane Chambers in 1857.

Please let me know if you need further information. I have siblings names and some birth and death dates.

Alexander M. Pugh was born on 22 Apr 1838 in Alabama.
He married Carolina A. Mason. Their children were
Burrell, Mattie, and Margaret. I don't think this can
be the Pugh you are seeking because Alexander M. Pugh
died 5 Oct 1867.
