Gaughran in Royal navy

My great grandfather, Thomas Patrick Gaughran, was an engine room artificer in the Royal navy. The last family record I have is that his daughters (Madeleine and Kate), his wife (Elizabeth) and his son (Cyril) were living in Portsmouth and so I am guessing that he was stationed there. His daughter Madeleine was married to Joseph Broady on 7th Feb 1917 at St Swithuns RC Church on Waverly Rd. Portsmouth and she was listed as living in Southsea. However on the marriage certificate (7th Feb 1917) he is listed as deceased. Can anyone suggest how I find out more - especially his date of death etc.

Thanks for your help Jacqui - these are indeed my Gaughrans - Madeline was my grandmother. I had managed to find a record of the marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth Gaughran in 1888 and Elizabeth in the 1891 census but after that was stuck. Thankyou
