I am looking for the parents of Charles Martin. Date and place of birth I don't know. Charles had a son Joseph Frederick Martin, born 1839, died 1920. I don't know if there were other children.

All of my Martins so far have come from Leading Tickles, Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland.

My mother used to say that we belonged to the MicMac Indians but I choose to think we are Eskimo. My brother told me that I should look around Cartwright.

I do hope there is something you can do to help me.

Thank you for your time.

WE have two distinct Martin Families in the Cartwright area of Labrador, but neither seems to be connected to yours. Our Martins come from a James Martin (1809-1876) and an un-named Martin , probably William, of the same generation. They could be brothers. Either they, or their father(s) came from England to Labrador. They would be about the same age as the father of your Charles. The names, Charles, Joseph, and Frederick do not appear anywhere in either of the two Labrador Martin Families in the last 5 generations, so I suspect their is no connection.

Hi Bernie
I'm not researching the surname Martin but in a book that I have there is 4 Martin's mentioned but only one from the Labrador area. Here's what it says:
MARTIN,MARTIN (1890-1976).b Nain;Inuit elder;d Nain Sept.
Martin was for many years chief elder of the Inuit community at Nain and frequently served as a lay preacher for the Moravian congregation there. RHC

I hope this helps.Take care.

there is some lore among the Rowsells of Leading Tickles that they had Indian or colored connections in the early 1800's. Info is at http://al_beagan.tripod.com/APRIL4/2483.htm

I am researching my family name Robinson. My great grandmother Barbara Ellen Robinson married David Martin. David Martin was born 7th Nov 1893 Dove Brook, Labrador. His parents were Henry and Emily, Henry was a farmer. David came to England during the first world war, he met Barbara Ellen and they married on 29th July 1922 and lived in Wales. I think David had a brother called Colombine Martin who lived in Cartwright, Labrador and another brother Vern who was married to Phoebe and had two daughters Christine aged 3 and Jean aged 4 months in April 1950. If anyone has any information on any of these names please contact me. Thanks.

Hi Elizabeth:

Your GGfatherDavid Martin was the youngest of seven children of Henry and Emily (Davis) Martin. His siblings were Thomas, Dorcas, Claude, Robert James, Clara, and Frank Scott. Vern and Columbine(female) were not David's siblings but were children of his brother Frank. I know them both personally, in fact I went to school with Columbine who now lives in the US.
David was the son of James (1809-1876)and Caroline (Bird) Martin (1815-1893). I have no further info on James. Both are buried In Cartwright, Labrador. Caroline was the daughter of George and Eliza (nee unknown) Bird. George Bird was the son of Joseph Bird of Sturminster, England, and he settled at Dove Brook, Labrador. As one of my GGmother's was Caroline's sister, I guess we are distant cousins.
Emily (Davis) Martin (1853-1894)was the daughter of Charles and Harriet (Pardy) Davis (1815-1897). Charles came from England and settled at Goose Cove, Labrador. He is buried at North River, Labrador, near Cartwright. Harriet (Pardy) Davis was the daughter of George and (name unknown) Pardy. George came from Rngland and settled at Paradise River, Labrador. His wife was Inuit.
Needless to say you have many, many relatives in Labrador.

Regards
Bernie

Hi Bernie,
Thanks for replying to my message. I got the names from a letter Columbine had sent my grandmother Dorcus, she is the daughter of David Martin, the letter was dated April 1950. I didn't know who was who in the letter. I knew David had a brother. I have a photo of David Martin with his nephew, but I dont know the name of his nephew. Thank you for giving me the names of Henry and Emily's parents, I will add them to my tree. Do you know any of the siblings of Davids brothers and sisters. Thank you Elizabeth. (England)
