I do not know. The information I have is limited. I obtained his name from the original marriage certificate of his daughter Ann Gartside b. 1852 m. 1872 where he is noted as a wollen weaver from New Delph.

From a newspaper article featuring his daughter Alice Gartside Wrigley I learned he had 13 children. Also that the father would take 3 children to the stables as he believed horse breath would keep off whooping cough. ( I know that won't help with my tree. I just found it funny lol)

I have a photo album that once belonged to Ann Gartside Haigh that has photos with names of siblings. I put it all together and searched the census and came up with a birth year of 1817. That's all I know.

If we have the same Arthur Gartside, any information you are willing to provide is greatly apprecieated!

Thank you, Jacki

Yes it does! (This is so exciting) He is my 3rd great grandfather and I have quite a bit of info going forward, but I am stuck with him. Perhaps it's do to the fact that I have not been researching ancestry for that long and I may not be looking it the right places. I have photos of Arthur, Alice, Sarah, Thos., Mary, Frances and a family. Please email me if you would like to share information.

Hi Jacki,

The only Arthur Gartside born c. 1817 in my database, is Arthur, son of Enoch Gartside and Alice Wood baptized at Dobcross Holy Trinity 1 Dec 1816.
Arthur married Mary Brierley in 1837 at St. Chads, Saddleworth and they had 11 children that I know of:
Alfred - 1838 - married Eliza Wood at Friarmere
Alice - 1840 - married a John Wirgley 1861 at Friarmere
Thomas - 1842 - Married Mary Wrigley 1865 at Friarmere
Mary - 1843 - married Samuel Wood 1871 at Dobcross
Elizabeth - 1847 - married John Wood at Dobcross
Esther - 1849
Ann - 1850
Jane - 1854
Benjamin - 1856
Sarah - 1857 - married John E. Langfield at St. Chads
Frances - 1860 - married James Handford 1860 at Dobcross

This family can be traced back to Ralph Gartside who died in 1658.
