Hi, What time frame are you researching ?
What Provinces are you researching?

Perhaps Posting Surnames, Names of interest could be helpful
There may be persons researching the same families - connections - who may be able to assit.

Census:
Canada Census is available to 1911 Nationwide - 1916 for the 3 Prairie Provinces of Alberta, Manitoba Saskatchewan.
Automated Genealogy Online Census 1901, 1906, 1911

Birth Marriage Death:
There is No National Index for Birth Marriage Death in Canada.
Each Province is responsible for the Vital Events in their area.
Some Provinces have made some indexes available online:
the time line is restrictive.
Alberta: Does not make Index / Records available. All information from the Govt of Alberta Vital Statistics Registry offices -may be restricted - Cost $40 aprox

British Columbia: Marriage 1859-1936 Birth 1872-1903 Death 1872 -1990
Index can be viewed online. Microfilm can be viewed at the Provincial Archive in Victoria - Some Public & University Libraries in the Province. Some Libraries - Genealogical Societies in other Provinces may hold the films.
Latter Day Saints Family History Centres - may hold the films or can be brought in to a local Centre or Public Library.
Information can be viewed at no cost. Transcribed. Photo copies depend on copy machine charges - .50 cents or less in BC.

Manitoba: Index available online -restricted time line
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
Birth: 100 years - Marriage 80 years - Death 70 years

Saskatchewan: Index Available Online - restricted time line
http://www.isc.ca/VitalStatistics/Genealogy/vsgs_srch.aspx
Births: over 100 years Deaths over 70 years
Marriages over 75 years [ not indexed -cannot be searched oline ]
Index may not be complete -there are persons I could not find.

Other Provinces may also have index online .

ANCESTRY: Only has access to information that is made available to them. They will not have any Birth, Marriage , Records - that are still considered Private.
only information that is now Public Record.
Information that is submitted re genealogy etc
Ancestry is an Ongoing Project.

Family Search Org : Online - may be helpful -
Also an ongoing project.

Cheers, Stella

Archives Canada have 1871 & 1881 (LDS have 1881 also)

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1871/ind...

If you go to Cyndi's list, a very good site for Canada & US censuses.

http://www.cyndislist.com/canada/census/1871/

And there may be more.
The US census for 1940 will be available Apr 2/2012
How come Canada is so out dated?

Re Canada Census . Every country - determines when some information becomes Public Record
In Canada it is 92 years.
In U.S.A. it is 72 years
In England there is /was a 100 year rule.
We did have a long hard fight to get the 1901,1906 census released to the public.

We should have a movement going to open Canada up on this.
Researching is easier to do in Canada than in the US except for our antiquated census date requirements.
Researching in the US is so commercialized, one has to pay for just about everything. At least in Canada census info is free and I haven't found anything in the US that compares at all to our Automated Genealogy, a wonderful item brought about thanks to so many volunteer transcribers.

There was a long hard fight=by many people for a number of years -letters, Petitions etc -before we were finally able to get access to the 1901 Census [the chief statistician at that time had a different opinion of what is allowed] It was finally released well after the 92 years. Many Volunteers transcribed before it went online. Same for 1906

Unfortunately - we do not have free online access to the 1916 Census for Canada. That can be obtained through Ancestry - for a fee. Some public libraries subscribe - and we can search that venue.

Some Provinces have made their Vital Records available - but there is a different time frame re privacy for each Province. BC allows access to view, transcribe at no copy at the cost of copy machine. Marriage 1859-1934 - Death 1872-1989 - Births 1872 -1903 *Because fo privacy concerns for those now living beyond 100 yeas - access to birth info is restricted to the 121st year. [and I need them for 1915 & 1917] By the time those ara available - our family history book - will not be seen by family now in their 70's 80's

I will have to re-check the 1916 Sask census as it was available for no fee a couple months ago. If Ancestry.ca or Ancestry.com have somehow made it only available through them, there is a real problem and I would say a legal problem!
I of course know for sure it was available as my mother is on that census and the census taker really messed up. Her name was totally incorrect and she was recorded as a son, rather than a daughter!
Will have to take a look.
