Bell (Ireland to England) and Martin (Kent) families?

If anyone can help me locate information about my lovely mother-in-law's family, I'd be most grateful. She was a war bride and came to the USA in 1946 on the Queen E II with a 2-year old daughter and infant son. Her father was Harold Leonard Martin and her mother was Jessie Evelyn Bell. Jessie's father, John Bell, came from Ireland and worked on the River Medway in the Short Brothers plant building seaplanes. Gwen was brought up in Rochester.

I think Harold Martin's father was Richard Z. Martin, but I've hit dead-ends now. ANY information about these rather common names would be most appreciated.

Sue,
Thank you so much for this. I tried to find the 1901 census since I had located the 1891 census. I could not do so - how did you find it?

Again, I really appreciate this information!

She is Gwendoline F Martin Irwin, born July, 1922. I used your address for the site run by ancestry.com.uk and confirmed what you found. Gwen is listed as "Medway 2a, 1280" there. Her mother's name was Jessie Evelyn Bell. SHE served in WW I and was given the nickname "Dingy" Bell. Gwen's father, Harold Martin, was in the Royal Navy, but I cannot find accounts of him there . . . too many Harold Martins.

Thank you so much!

Gwendoline Frances Martin married Joseph George Irwin in England during the war. I'm not sure where and, to be honest, I'm not sure when. It was the war, and they "moved" the date back about three months when they came to the states due to daughter Gwenda's birth in the UK less than nine months before the marriage. (A strong and wonderful marriage that lasted more than 52 years!)

I'm so grateful for all the information provided in response to my posting. Gwen turns 87 in July, and we have a two-week family gathering planned for June with her. Her father, Harold L. Martin, and her mother, Jessie Bell Martin, divorced when she was a young teen, so she is learning along with me about some of these ancestors. I'm to receive more information from her next week in the mail, so I'll undoubtably be posting more questions.

Thanks again from the sunny South! (Atlanta, GA, USA)M
