I've gotten pretty far in my search for my great great grandfather. I can't seem to locate his date of death. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be great. From the 1920 census he was living in Columbus franklin county. On his son's John's obituary it lists him as proceeding his father in death Rev Miles Merchant. I've been stuck on that for a couple of months now. Any help would be appreciated.

Something got me interested in looking for your ancestor's info (though I'm not related). Unfortunately I haven't so far found his death date either. I have seen him in every census from 1860 to 1920 usually in Norwich Twp., Franklin Co., OH (Hilliards). But while I've found death certificates for several of his children, including John, I haven't found a death date for Miles. It appears his wife Alice died between 1900 and 1910 and that they had 15 children. It also appears Miles' father was b ~1801 VA and was named something like Yammer Merchant.

Small update. Yammer is also in Norwich Twp., in 1850 with wife Tabitha and 8 children and in 1840 in Columbus, OH with 4 children with ages and sexes as expected from the 1850c.

For a point of reference it would be helpful if you mentioned what year the son died, then searching could begin for the father.

That's how far I've gotten and come to a dead stop. I thought it would be easier finding him knowing he was a Reverend but that was no help either. I plan to make a trip to the cemetery where two of his children are born and they may be the break through I need.

When did this son John die? That is a point of reference to start with. Also I believe Ancestry.com which I don't have a subscription too has Ohio death records up to I believe 1958. You could make a specific request with subject line "Ancestry.com Ohio Death lookup date" then in the body of message give Rev. Merchant's Birthdate and last known place of residence.

Someone out there with a subscription to ancestry.com is bound to help you. I checked the Ohio Death Index online up to 1937 and did not find him. Unless he was still a young man and applied for Social Security in the 1930's then he would would have an application on file with social Security administration but I don't know when the Rev. was born so that is only a theory.

I have a subcription to ancestory.com and still no luck. John Merchant died 21 Oct 1940. I have look everywhere and it seems Miles just vanished. I know from his son's obituary he died prior to 1940 and the census of 1920 still has him listed. I don't know where else to look.

I am in search of Miles Merchant date of death.
