I know that my ancestor Benjamin Knights emigrated to Australia with his wife Sarah Cottage/Cotteridge, arriving in Victoria on 1.1.1853. They sailed on the Ann Milne. Benjmain was 36, Sarah was 35. I also know that Sarah died in Hamilton, Victoria on 24/3/1859 and that she was buried in the cemetery at Hamilton. Benjamin was the informant of her death. However I then can find no clue whatsoever of what happened to Benjamin. If anyone can give any suggestions or has any clues then I would really appreciate it!
We share the same surname! I am trying to find Aussie ancestors - I believe my G/father was from Vic (Warnambool (sp??!) - and have letters dated 1912 and 1913 indicating a half brother (Harry?) who had two daughters who married two brothers..... and also a Henry Melbourne Knights - an uncle or??? - are you able to help here? If so, will send you copies of the scant documentation I have.
Your post & Karen's, caught my eye, as I'm researching Knights as well.
This may be your Henry Melbourne Knight...
Henry Melbourne Knight - d.1913 W.bool - age 60 (c.1853) Parents: Walter Knight & Sarah Dunnell.
This could his be wife & child...
James Farley Knights - d.1958 'Warr' - age 81 (c.1877) Parents: Henry Melbourne Knights & Selina Snell
Henry (b.Norfolk) & Selina married in 1876 Victoria.
Oh we go, this may be the two sisters who married two brothers...also daughters of Henry & Selina...
Maria Susannah WALLACE - d.1967 'Warr' - age 86 (c.1881)
Selina Catherine WALLACE - d.1973 'Warr' - age 88 (c.1885)
If you think this is your family, and you'd like more info, please let me know.
What was your Great and/or Grandfather's name?
Hi Sherrie Many thanks for your message - yes - definitely relations from letters I have dated around 1912 - my G/F's name was James Anderson K. I recently found his grave, and there is a bit of a mystery re his age.. died 1912 aged 58, and his widow died 1939 aged 75.....!!!!...could be.... any info you could pass on would be appreciated.. IF I can digitise letters, would you like copies - or else I could fax them. What is your interest in "Knights"?
Here's James' birth...
James Anderson Knight - 1859 rego.3274 Warrnambool - Parents: Walter Knight & Robina Anderson
Walter & Robina were married in 1858 rego.1659
Robina Knights died in 1860 age 30 (c.1830), Parents: Janes (James?) Anderson & Isabella MacPherson.
Robina's birth place is given as 'INV', I don't know what that's short for. :)
Birth: 21 JUN 1830
Christening: 23 JUN 1830 Cromdale And Inverallan And Advie, Inverness, Scotland)
I'd say Walter was married to Sarah Dunnell first, and she died in 1857 (age 34 - b. Norfolk - Par: James & Mary Dunnell), and then Walter married Robina in 1858.
So James Anderson Knights & Henry Melbourne Knights were half brothers.
Walter & Sarah had another 2 children, before Sarah died...
1. Alice Maria - b.1856 Warrnambool - poss. d.1860
2. James Dunnell - b.1857 Warr. d.1857 14 weeks old.
Back to Henry Melbourne Knight's daughters who married the Wallace boys...
Marie Susannah Knights m. John Wallace in 1904
Selina Cathering Knights m. James Henry Wallace in 1906
Another child for Henry & Selina Knights...
Walter Henry Knights - d.1974 Warr age 73 (c.1901)
James Farley Knights (mentioned in previous post) was married to Elizabeth McLaren m.1907.
Interesting that James married under James 'Stawell' Knights.
Unfortunately I can't identifiy Walter Knights' (married to Sarah & Robina) death.
As far as I know the Knight family I'm researching is totally unrelated...
Mark Levi KNIGHT married Catherine Gladys MURPHY in Victoria 1927.
Mark's parents were Northcote Knight & Cora Varney. Mark had 4 sisters, who just disappeared off the face of the earth! :)
Murphy is my main branch. As you can imagine researching the surname Murphy... I thought it would be easier trying to track Catherine through the Knight branch.
WOW! Many many thanks for that - the missing link! From the two old letters I have, the only fact I gleaned was that H. Melbourne K was a half brother to J.A.K. - and I had some idea about the sisters - the rest is all new - so again, many many thanks.. keep it touch if there might be anything I can help with...but "Murphy" - hmmm quite a task! I guess you are in Aust? I may go over someday to Vic and do some more "digging".
Cheers for now,
Many years on! I now have more than a suspicion that Benjamin MIGHT be a brother to Walter Knights (my ggf). The information I have (very informally) is that Walter had two brothers - recent news to me - who apparently travelled separately to Aust.. does this make sense to you?
Many, MANY years on! I may not be Sherrie, but I am also research the Knights family. I have photos and stories if you are interested!
That sounds fantastic! I have very few (almost no) stories, and very few pics, so would love to make contact. I do have a tree in FTM2008 and gedcom formats, plus a "story" of KNIGHTS from Norfolk to Australia and NZ. My tree is by no means complete, but what I have is generally validated.
Are you in NZ? If so I'd like to meet up. Otherwise email me on firstname.lastname@example.org
. Am happy to provide you with what data I have, and look forward to hearing from you.
Have just realised that you are in NSW. Hope not in fire territory!
