I have a book titled "Ancestors Descendants of An Ohio gott Family - 1628-1972" written by Phillip Porter Gott, now deceased. I believe the book is no longer in print. In this book there is much history of the Gott family. There is a John Gott, son of Adolphus Gott. Adolphus came to Ohio in 1833. He had seven sons; and three daughters. They were William, Talcut, Peter, John, James, Joseph, Westelles,Polly, Betsy and Sally. John had five sons and five daughters. They were William, Corridon, John, George, Don, Phoebe, Jerusia, Jane, Olive and Susan. Even though this book gives the name Jerusia, as opposed to the spelling you have of Jerusha, it may be the same person. In another part of the book it shows a Jerusia Gott married Luther Taber in Waterford, PA. If you have been doing much research, I am sure you have found many John Gott's - This may or may not be the one you are looking for.

The Descendants
of
Charles Gott
of Salem Massachusetts

From: Daniel Gott, Mount Desert Pioneer: his ancestors and descendants by
William O. Sawtelle

NOTES ON THE GOTTS OF NEW ENGLAND

The name of Gott is of Old English origin, meaning a water way or water course,
to be recognized in our word gutter and gut, meaning a channel of restricted limits.
As early as the fourteenth century Gotts appear in the English records and later as
residents in Yorkshire and in Kent. A diligent search among the parish records of
Old England has failed to locate the antecedents of Charles Gott and his wife
Sarah, first of the name in New England. In the publications of the British Records
Society the name is frequently met with and also in the numerous English county
genealogies; but no mention of any Charles Gott of whom Hubbard thus speaks:
"With Mr. Endicott in the year 1628 came Mr. Gotte, Mr. Brokenbury, Mr.
Davenport and others who being added to Capt. Trask's preparations for a new
colony that was coming over."

The Captain Trask mentioned by the New England historian was Captain William
Trask and it is interesting to note this early mention of two family names well
known in the Mount Desert region. As the history of any region is contained in
family records I make no apology in presenting these papers relating to the Gotts of
New England who spread from Salem, Massachusetts, to Connecticut and to New
York; to various parts of Maine, especially Mount Desert where many of them
were among the first permanent settlers. La Petite Plaisance of Champlain is our
Gott's Island of today; a name for which lack of euphony is more than
compensated by its significance in the pioneer history of Mount Desert.

Descendants of Charles Gott

Generation One

1. Charles Gott was born circa 1605 at England. He married Sarah (--?--) on 30 Oct 1625 at Salem, Massachusetts. He

December 12, 1636, Charles, baptized April 1639, and Daniel, baptized April 28, 1646, though Savage (Genealogical Dict.
2: 284), give these baptisms as of February 12, 1637; June, 1639, and June 28, 1646. He died on 23 Jan 1667.

lack of euphony is more than compensated by its significance in the pioneer history of Mount Desert. On June 28,1628, the
ship Abigail sailed from Weymouth, England for America. Among those on board were John Endicott, afterwards
Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay and Charles Gott. After a passage of two and a half months the Abigail
reached Salem and two years later the records show that Charles Gott, on October 19, 1630, requested admission as
freeman; that on May 18, 1631, he was received as such. In 1635 he was made a deacon of the

Church and all through his life he played an active part in civic affairs. His wife's first name was Sarah but I have been
unable to determine her maiden name. In the Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County (published by the
Essex Institute, 1917), a John Mansfield is mentioned as a cousin of Daniel, son of Charles (2:251), but this is a clue

that I have not yet been able to follow up. There is on record a Gift Gott who subscribed her name to the covenant of the
First Church of Salem, 1637 (Hist. Coll. Essex Inst. 1:39, 1859). Perhaps she was the mother of Charles Gott or his sister.
Charles and Sarah Gott were the parents of three children, (Salem Rec.) Deborah, bpt. Dec. 12, 1636; Charles, bpt.

April 1639; Daniel, bpt. April 28, 1646, though Savage (Genealogical Dict. 2: 284), gives these baptisms as of Feb. 12,
1637; June, 1639, June 28, 1646. In 1653, Charles Gott purchased land and a dwelling house in Wenham, Mass., removed
thither with his family and spent the remainder of his life there. He represented the Town in the General Court from 1654
to 1666 and his name is frequently mentioned in the records. On December 8, 1663, both he and his wife were admitted to
the Wenham Church. His wife Sarah died on August 8, 1665. The Court Records give the date of Charles Gott's death as
January 23, 1667. In his will, proved March 31, 1668, he mentions his sons Charles and Daniel; Charles shall have my
great Copper Kitle," and Daniel "my brass Kitle."

Sarah (--?--) was born circa 1616. She died on 18 Aug 1665.

2. ii. Charles Jr., baptized Apr 1639; married Sarah Dennis; married Lydia Clark.

From Daniel Gott Mount Desert Pioneer: "The record of Charles (III) and wife
Elizabeth is incomplete. From the Wenham records the following list of their
children has been obtained. It is possible that this line died out in the fourth
generation, though this is not certain. I have been unable to trace it further."

Children of Charles Gott III and Elizabeth (--?--) all born at Wenham,

i. Charles was born on 29 Nov 1686. Marriage banns for he and Mary

In 1702 the family removed from Wenham to Gloucester. On October 23 of that
year, Samuel purchased of William Cogswell, of Chebaco, for sixty pounds lawful
money, eight six acre lots on Halibut point. The Lynn records give the marriage
intentions of a Samuel Gott, of Gloucester, and Mrs. Ruth Ivory, March 31, 1723.
Perhaps this is Samuel (III) who married. Bethany Cogswell, December 16, 1723.

Margaret Andrews was born in 1676 at Ipswich, Massachusetts. Margaret
Andrews was a descendant of Lieutenant John Andrews, of Ipswich. Through her
Daniel Gott Jr. was related to two other pioneer families of Mount Desert, the

From Daniel Gott, Mount Desert Pioneer: John Gott (IV) was a selectman of
Wenham, served on various town boundary committees and his name is often
coupled with that of his brother Samuel. Here is on of several entries in the town

Samuel Gott all of Wenham concerning ye way which Leads from ye Town bridge
through their Lotts to see if they will give liberty of a convenient was for ye
neighbors to go through said lots" (Topsfield Record). The death of John and
Martha's children is a pathetic and tragic reminder of the terrible toll extracted by
an epidemic of "throat distemper" which raged in New England 1736-38.

Surnames: DeWitt Witt Gott Breck wood
Rebecca Gott, b. 31 Dec. 1732 at Marlborough, marr. Thomas Witt, b. 24 May 1730 at Marlborough. They had 3 known children, Sally B., Thomas, and Wainwright.
I do not have proof of this marriage or the location of their deaths.
This Thomas was the son of Capt. Thomas Witt and Martha Wood.
[However, Wainwright appears to have been named for Elizabeth Wainwright, wife of Rev. Robert Breck, making her his grandmother.]
Wainwright was born in Petersham, Worcester, MA. in 1777 but the town clerk does not have any death records for this clan.
Appreciate any help proving this connection.
