Wilhelm and Elizabeth Kamphaus

Even though neither of these people are my direct descendants, as far as I can tell, does anyone have any direct information on either of them? They are listed on the 1870 Census reports as residing in Detroit. What I am looking for in particular is their wedding date and where they were married.

Thank you

I’m not related to any member of this family.

Based on their ages, I'd say that they were married in Europe.

Wilhelm was born in Prussia [Poland/GER]
Elizabeth born in Bavaria [GER]

FYI -
1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

Immigration data was not asked on census records until the 1900 census.+++

Thanks for the reply. My GGgrandparents were Wilhelm and Elizabeth, but not the same as the Michigan ones. I think they were married in Kentucky. And since the first names were identical, I was hoping that I had not fouled one off. So it looks like my theory is still correct.
Thanks again.

The GG grandparents of mine, the Iowa clan, only had one child together. George. Who was born in Clayton county Iowa around 1856-57. Wilhellm was married 3 times, with Elizabeth being the 2nd spouse. I think the birth records of George as well as the death records of Elizabeth are held by the Catholic Church in Guttenburg Iowa. But I have had no luck with them nor the Archdiocese in Debuke Iowa.
Later on Wilhelm, George and Sophia ( the 3rd spouse) end up in Winnesheik Co Iowa, after a brief stay in Cincinnati Ohio. Wilhelm and Sophia are buried in Festina Iowa. George moves to Oklahoma and is buried in Canute Oklahoma.
Kind of a quick synopsis. I have a lot more info, but cannot tie all the loose ends, especially anout Elizabeth(as a guarantee) being George's mom.

STORY -
The first six years of their married life, Catherine and George lived on a farm near Festina, which they had purchased from George's parents. Five children were born: Sophia, William, Bernard, Katherine and Henry. In October of 1887 they sold their farm to Catherine's father and moved to the Ossian vicinity where George was a carpenter. Six more children were born: Joseph, Mary, George, Frank,
Dortha and Theodore. Catherine died at the age of 38. In 1903 George and the younger children moved
to Canute, Oklahoma to be near a married daughter who no doubt helped raise the children. Later William, Katherine and Henry moved to Oklahoma, but Bernard decided to remain in Iowa.

Great info.
The Sophia Kamphaus that u referred to was George's daughter-in-law, who died at a edyoung woman's age. I did find Wilhelm and his first wife along with the oldest brother of Wilhelm son in the 1850 US census rpt in Clayton county Iowa. I also find Wihelm in the 1852, 1854 and 1856 Iowa census reports. Elizabeth shows in 1854 or 1856.
In 1860 i find nothing but he shows ip in 1870 with his last wife, Sophia. So I assume his first wife, then Elizabeth and two of Wilhelm's oldest sons die in the Guttenburg area between 1852- 1859. He marries Sophia in 1860 in Cincinnati Ohio.
That is why I think the Catholic church in Guttenburg holds all the answers. The church claims all the records for this time frame are in Dubuque Iowa.
So that is where i am sitting.
Thanks for ur research,

You must remember that the C. Church is very secretative abt releasing vital records. It's like squezzing water for a rock. Also, the records will either be in German or Latin.
