Looking for folks researching surname Herdes. My ancestor was Louis Herdes (ca1850s-1814) of Mecklenburg County, NC. Oral family history has that he was Hessian soldier. I had found other Herdes soldiers (some from Hessen-Kassel), but no Louis. Have also seen his name written in Lutheran church records and on deeds as Ludwig Herdes, Ludwick Hartise, and Lewis Herdes.

Hello! I am researching this name.
I have found where lewis has purchased land in NC.
which you may already have known. And that
is was a Deacon of the Crooked Creek Church
what is now (morningstar Lutheran) located
between Matthews & Mint Hill. (NC)
I have not found lewis' name as a Soldier in the REV. War.
I have looked at a book in the Library - but
have not seen a Hartis name.

My finace is a great great great great grandson of Lewis Hartis and i just started researching hisfamily. I have found only two Herdes that were Hessian soldiers and they are:
Georg Herdes born in Hofgeismar
Wilhelm Herdes born in Gottsbueren.

I am still looking for more information about Lewis and his wife Anna Elizabeth and where the Waxhaw Indian bloodline came in.

Surnames: Herdes, Holman, Langemann, Macrander, Nicolai.
The Heerdes and Herdes surname appears in land records near Helsen and Mengeringhausen near present day Bad Arolsen. A 1968 published study by Robert Weitekamp, contains this family surname. Later historical studies of civil service employees in Corbach (or Korbach) Waldeck mention Anton Holmann married to Catharine Herdes, dau. of Conrad Herdes, a black smith and member of a long established family in the area. Anton Holman was listed as a vetter (cousin or uncle) of Arnold Langemann (the family later became known as Macrander, a Greek language pseudonym of Langemann adopted by son Josias Langeman (a.k.a. Macrander) of Giessen University. The Herdes surname in the time frame of 1540 and later is not well documented, but Holman, Langemann, Macrander and Philipp Nicolai, a pastor and brother in law of Arnold Langemann are very well documented due to their ministerial and civil service positions in service of the Counts von Waldeck.
