I am trying to find out any information about my grandmother Julia Hourihan she lived in London, Shoreditch but was born? in Glengarriff Bantry. I do not know her parent/siblings names but she was from a large family. I have found a possible family on Wales census 1871,1891 with a Julia of the correct age and wish to eliminate (or not) this family living in Merthyr Tydfil. One of her sisters married a Riordan (not sure which way they spelt it as there are several spelling variations). Some of the family went to USA.

To Teresa Murphy, my grandmothers name was also Julia Hourihan, and her father,s name was John Hourihan, born in Corby Ireland 1848.However I believe her to have been born in Bethnal Green London abt.1877,I also think she may have had a twin brother called Timothy. My grandmother married William Joseph Murphy born abt.1877 possibly in Fermoy Co.Cork.They married in1905 in the Shoreditch area(Hoxton) in a Roman Catholic church ceromony.I think your father was my Uncle Joe,who played the bagpipes, if so Teresa that makes us first cousins. If you think we have any connections, please ignore the above E-Mail, however you can contact me on mary256@blueyonder.co.uk my maiden name is also Murphy.

Surnames: Hourihan - Kennedy
Hi Teresa,
I have a John Hourihan that married a Julia Kennedy and they did move to Merthyr Tydfil Wales. I have that John was about 1837 in co.cork Ireland and Julia was born abt 1836 Bantry,Co.cork Ireland. They moved to wales around 1871 as that is the first time I find them on the census.
I know this is an old posting, but let me know if you think there is any connection

Hi Dale

Thanks for your posting, I am aware of the Hourihan families in Wales and there is no known connection. Since posting I have found my grandmother was actually born in London but there is definitely a link to Glengarriff which I have yet to prove.
Regards

Teresa

Hi
I have been researching my paternal greatgrandmothers family. There were five in the family, Julia, Mary, Patrick, Lizzie, Frances, Thomas and Michael. Julia Hourihan was the oldest born 21/11/1880 in Glengarriff. Her parents were Frances lynch married to Thomas Hourihan. I wonder if this is the same person.

Hi Marion
Thanks for your post, unfortunately not the same Julia I have since found that that Julia was born in Shoreditch in 1878 but her mother died in 1881 and her father sent her to live with relatives, she appears in 1891 census in London age 14 living with patneral grandfather and aunt. My late father was told by his mother that she came to London aged 21 from Glengarriff so maybe she was sent to live with relatives there. Her father was John Hourihan c1848-1911 Bricklayer/Labourer and his father was Timothy c1813 or later and he was a farm labourer. I do not know of any siblings for John or who his mother was. Regards Teresa

Hi Julia

I have just discovered a Timothy Hourihan in my line. Was Timothy Hourihan and his son born in Glengarriff?
