I'm searching for information regarding my possible 9G-grandparents, Warnaer Wessells and Anne Elizabeth Masschop, who lived in New Amsterdam (New York City) during the 1600's.

I believe that Warnaer may have migrated from Holland to New Amsterdam, but I've not found a passenger ship record for him yet, nor have I found any information identifying his parents, other than a possible name of his mother of Metja Boonen. I've found family tree postings that list his siblings as Dirk, Christiana, Henrica, Maria and Harmanus.

I have no information about Anne's family or her birthplace.

This is my possible ancestral line to Warnaer and Anne:

9G-grandparents: Warnaer m. Anne
8G-GP: Gerardus Wessells m. Unknown
7G-GP: James Vessells (Wessells) m. Elizabeth Tolley
6G-GP: James Vessells m. Temperance Tippett
5G-GP: Mary Ann Vessells m. John Bernard Seals/Seale
4G-GP: Ann Temperance Seals m. George A. Sharum
3G-GP: James Dominick Sharum m. Sabra Ann Standley
2G-GP: Ransom Asbury Sharum m. Caroline Salmon
G-GP: Otto Gettis Sharum m. Nancy Emeline Atwell
GP: Mabel May Sharum m. Don Van Reid

Not much to go on, but I'm plan to search the available records of the New Amsterdam colony to see if there are listings of Wessells names that could lead to information about Warnaer and Anne and their families.

Any information or leads about the Wessells and Masschop families or genealogy research sources for the New Amsterdam colony that could help me verify these assumptions and possible kinship would be appreciated.

There are many unrelated Wessel families in New Netherland/NY in this time period. I did a study on them (not complete) and can give you the following info on your Warner:

In 1655 Warner Wessels and Anna Elisabeth Maskop were the sponsor at the baptims of Elisabeth, d/o Lodevyck Corneliszen [Post] and Agnietje Boons.

These church records can be viewed online at Olive Tree Genealogy (my site). Start at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/church/rdcbapt.shtml

Warner Wessels can be found on the RDC members list on p. 501 - the list begins in 1649 on p. 497 and ends in 1659 on p. 539. This is also online (the entire Membership list) starting at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/church/rdcmembers.shtml

Anna and Warner had 6 proven children, 5 were bpt in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam/NY - these can be found online. Briefly they are:

Elisabeth
Gerardus
Geertruyd
Maria
Christina
Aeltie

Your ancestor, Gerardus' bpt is found on date 1657 Apr 8. He is also named as a sibling of Christian [sic] Wessells, widow of Jacob Teller in her will, dated September 17, 1698.

Passenger lists as we think of them, did NOT exist for this time period. What we have is the list of those who still owed passage money - the list of those who paid has never been published.

On Olive Tree, one of my pet projects has been to reconstruct the names of those who sailed on ships from Holland to New Netherland (NY) 1624-1686. I used several primary sources, including notarial records and contracts from Amsterdam.

You can see all the known ships and names of those who sailed (those names that can be found, remember we don't know who came over with passage paid up front) at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/ships/

What makes you think that Metje Boonen is Warner's mother? She was one of the bpt sponsors for little Gerardus but I've not seen anything to indicate her relationship (if any) the family.

Of the names you listed as possible siblings of your Warner, let me quickly touch on them -- you can do the homework to figure out if the circumstantial evidence means anything :

Henrica Wessels was md to Allard Anthony and he was also a sponsor at little Gerardus' bpt. She does not name Warner in her will - naming her siblings Christina, Maria, Harmanus and Dirck. She did have a brother Warner, but not YOUR Warner - her brother Warner md Deborah Beek then Elizabeth Cornelise.

It's confusing, be careful trying to put together these family groups and don't believe everything online UNLESS it is a primary source.

Lorine

Henrica is listed as "from Utrecht" at her marriage

Warnaer Wessells was born in the Netherlands. He is my 9th ggf. His daughter, Maria Wessells married Pieter Alricks (also of the Netherlands) and had Wessell Alricks. They came to New York, but settled in New Castle, Delaware. I am able to trace pedigree. Google Descendants of Wolphert Gerretse Van Kowenhoven and look on page 1101.

Happy hunting - keep in touch!

I found this resource as well (descendants of Wolphert...). It's incredibly thorough, but does anyone know for sure how accurate the information is that the creator found? Has it been verified?
