Surnames: Fleming, Sarah and her family
Hello

I am looking for a male Fleming possibly out of SC who married a Frances R Unknown born in SC and moved to Alabama possibly Pike County from the early 1840's and lived until at least 1856. Their oldest child was born in Alabama in 1844.

Would like information on this family and the family around them ancestors and decendantsof the imediate family.

The family is listed in the 1860 Census for Pike county Alabama but the husband is not listed with them. At this census they are in the poor part of the county listed living next door to the county Poor House and Asylum. Jo Ann. likes to think she was an employee living in supplied housing which could be possible. I do not know much more on them at this time. Their daughter Sarah Elizabeth Fleming b 1856 Jo Ann's gg grandmother wound up in Shelby County Texas married to Daniel Alonza Gunnels I have them married in 1877 in Shelby County but do not have documentation. Her brother John E b. 1844 is also in Shelby County Texas. I have no information now how they moved to Texas or if the other children James M b. 1850 and William H b. 1854 came with the family or if the mother remarried and the family came to Texas or if she moved with her family possibly in the migration during the war and after the fall of the south.

I will be at the library checking 1850 Census for Pike County Alabama and later census data for the rest of the family this weekend. Hopefully 1850 will give me the husbands name.

Thanks for taking the time to read this any information will be appreciated and I will share anything further on this family that I find.

Bill

Sarah was b. abt 1856 in Pike County, Alabama her family is in the 1850 and 1860 census her mother is listed as Frances R Fleming however there is no male head of household listed in either census. Sarah married Daniel A Gunnels in 1877 in Shelby County, Texas.

I promised to post what I found so others in the future would have access to the information on this family.

I am indebted to several people who helped in accessing records David Muckleroy of Nacogdoches, Texas, Betty Stokes of Houston, Texas and especially to Bill Huggins of Charlotte, North Carolina who provided much of what is in this posting.

Sarah Elizabeth Fleming’s Parents

Her mother’s surname name and the husband’s given name are still unknown but are looking hopeful. If she lived to 1903 Death Certificates filed with the County became required. They carry the name of the deceased and the names of both parents mothers maiden name when known. Her children in the county will have her maiden name on their death certificates and their father’s name. A trip is in the planning and I will post what is found to this forum.

Regarding your Pike Co., AL GenForum query, I found the following that you might want to add to the equation ;

From the Pike Co., AL Cemetery Records :

Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church
(Near Henderson in SW Pike Co. )

David Fleming
July 26, 1860
Aged 71 Years, 5 months, 18 Days.
Husband of Elizabeth Fleming

Elizabeth Fleming
Jan. 8, 1789
Nov. 7, 1842
Consort of David Fleming
Born in Chatham Co., NC
Died in Pike Co., Alabama

Infant Fleming
Dec. 2, 1846
Son of David and Sarah Fleming

Mary Jane Fleming
Dec. 5, 1845
July 27, 1846
Daughter of David and Sarah Fleming

From the Pike Co. Marriage Records :
David Fleming to Sarah King - Oct. 24, 1844 - book 1- page 229

Sarah Fleming to Jailus S. Pardue - July 14, 1861 -bk. 4-pg. 331

( Jailus S. Pardue was a widowed neighbor to the David Fleming's in the 1860 census )

David Fleming was apparently a fairly large landowner & farmer, in the 1860 Pike Co. Slave Census, he owned 30 slaves ..

Frances Flemming was living in the Troy precinct of Pike Co. in 1860, her next door neighbors were the County Poor House, and the farm family of John Jones - age 60 -SC ... John Jones owned 3 slaves in the 1860 Slave Census ..

The Records of Confederate Soldiers of Pike County, Ala. 1861-1865,
list the following :
John Fleming - Pvt. Co. B - 53rd AL Cavalry - CSA - survived the war.
( This unit was also listed in some publications as "mounted infantry")

I find no burial record in Pike Co, for Frances Flemming .. Perhaps she went to Texas , also ?

In the 1840 AL Census Index , the only Fleming / Flemming listed in Pike Co. was the David Fleming ..

In adjoining Dale Co., there were 4
Fleming households :
Gasaway
W.L.
William
Yancy

Also in neighboring Montgomery Co., there were 4 Fleming households:
John R. A.
Peter
Samuel
Samuel

Perhaps one of these 8 Fleming's was the husband of Frances ?, who was apparently widowed by 1850 ..

In the 1870 Pike Co., AL Census, the following is listed :

Perote Beat
Page 245
Family # 297 - white

Fannie Fleming - 49 - f - SC - housekeeper
Elizabeth - 13 - f - AL -

I found the following : May 9,2005

Pike County, AL Marriage Records :
Talton Faulk to Mary Fleming - Feb. 29, 1860 - book 4 - page 112

The 1860 Pike Co. Census Records list :

Pike Co., AL Marriage Records -

Reddick M. Starling to Caroline C. Fleming - Dec. 26, 1850

( Both names are misspelled in the records, he's Redorick and she's Carloty )

1860 Federal Census

Reddick M. Starling - 28-m- NC - farmer - $ 1200 / $ 570
Caroline " - 21- f - AL -
Joel " - 7- m-AL -
Frances M. " - 5- f -AL -
John H. " - 2 -m -AL -
Mary E. " - 1/12-f- AL -

The Records of Confederate Soldiers of Pike County, Ala. 1861-1865,
list :

Pvt. Reddick Starling - Co. B - 53rd AL Cavalry - CSA
Survived the war ...

( This is the same unit John Fleming served in )

Reddick and Caroline evidently remained in Pike Co., and Caroline must have died in the early 1870's ?

Reddick married a Sarah Wilson on July 28, 1875 , she was 22 years younger than he was .. Reddick died in Pike Co. in Oct. , 1911 ..

I just found two of the other Fleming's in Texas :

1880 Federal Census
