Can anyone give me some advice on how to find my Grandmother, Edith H. (Prather) Davis through the Daughters of America? Or what the difference is in DOA and DAR?

She was in the Star Spangled Banner Council #7, Daughters of America, Seat Pleasant (MD) district. I've also seen it listed as the Capital Heights district.
She was a member in Jan 1918, as a Prather and in 1928 as Davis. I also have a printout for Nov 16, but no year, when her children were presented, after her death. I can't find the year for this.......which is hurting my research.

If the DOA is related to the DAR, her ancestor would most likely be Allen W. Prather. If anyone can advise me as to where I go from here and how to find more info, I would be greatly appreciative!!

Thanks so much!

I'm sorry I am unable to provide any information about the Daughters of America. I searched for that organization on the Internet, but couldn't find a website about them. To my knowledge, this organization is not affiliated with the DAR.

The DAR, founded in 1890, is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to keeping America strong by promoting patriotism, preserving U.S. history and supporting education programs. Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than eighteen years of age and can prove lineal, blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence.

I checked our patriot database, but did not find an entry for Allen W. Prather. There are other patriots with that surname, however. This doesn't mean that Allen didn't serve in the Rev. War, but only that Allen Prather's service may not yet have been established with the DAR.

Please let us know if we may be of further assistance, and good luck with your continued search.

Thank you. All I can find online is the Catholic Daughters of America........so it may very well be this. I've found references to the National Council of Daughters of America, but can not find anything more detailed.

I'm sorry........I typed Allen W. Prather, but it was Aaron Allen Prather, JR. that I believe served in the Revolutionary War.

Thank you so much for your quick response!

There is an Aaron Prather in our Patriot Index. I hope this is your ancestor:

You may order copies of a member's application paper citing Aaron Prather's service. Please order only one copy at a time. To order, write to our national headquarters, including the above information from the Patriot Index and a check made payable to the TREASURER GENERAL, NSDAR in the amount of $10.00 (per copy).

Mail this to: Library Copy Services, NSDAR, 1776 D Street NW, Washington, DC 20006-5303. Please allow 6-8 weeks to receive a reply.

Member Application papers can give you genealogical information, sources of documents, and a list of the ancestors children, if known. In general, you can really benefit from these copies.

If you or someone in your family is interested in joining DAR, please send me your name, complete address and telephone number and I will forward it on to a chapter near you.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Thank you for the inquiry.
First of all you didn't give me much to go on with your Grandmother's Edith H. (Prather) Davis. It would help to have her birth and death year. With this you could check various census. Also, do not limit your research to only the name PRATHER check PRATER as well.

I checked the name DOA or Daughter of America and could only find Catholic Daughters of America. With you having the information that your grandmother belonged to the Star Spangled Banner Council #7, DOA in Seat Pleasant (MD) district. Don't you have more information???? DOA is not connect with DAR. Daughters of the American Revolution was organized in 1890.

I checked thru the Daughters of the American Revolution Patriots. No daughter joined DAR thru Allen W. Prather as their Patriot. And no daughter joined thru the name of Edith H. Prather or Edith H. Davis.

I viewed the 1910 United States Federal Census and found an Edith H Prather at age 13, estimated birth about 1897. And she was born in IN. Parents Allen L. & Lillie Prather. Their home in 1910 was Election Dist. 18, Prince George's, Maryland. Could this be your grandmother??

PLEASE contact me privately at B5090@aol.com
I happen to descend thru the PRATER/PRATHER line. Allen Prather is not my line, but I can put you in touch with someone that may have some information.
