Crover - Northern Colony

Surnames: Crover
I'm looking for information on my husband's great grandmother. Evelyn McIlquham (Crover) b. 4/21/1916 (Still living). She and her sisters Dorothy and Gertrude were placed in the Norther Colony. We don't know why or when, but Evelyn married at 16 yrs old and that is when she left the colony. She doesn't talk about her childhood, I'm sure it is very painful for her. I'm just looking for possibly her parents and why the girls were placed there.

Thank you

I am not related. Hope this helps. RP

Jamie, your message spells the name Crover. Did you mispell the name, by replacing what most likely was a "b" with a "v"?, or have you thought all this time that the name was Crover, and not Crober/Crowbar?

I may be wrong, but it seems like the family you are searching for was Crober/Crowbar.

From what I gathered, Evelyn's parents were Charles Franklin Crober/Crowbar and Mary Pearl Coates. Charles parents were William Crowbar and Sarah Sarvis (Servais?). Mary's parents were Israel Coates and Matilda Allen. Mary seems to have been married 2 times before she married Charles. Once to a Hewitt, and then to George L. Stevens.

Charles Crowbar/Crober & Mary Coates had 6 children. James Hasel Crowbar, who died April 20, 1900 (born 16 Feb 1899), about 14 months old. He was born & died in Humbird, Clark County, Wisconsin. Eva, born about 1902 (possibly in Mentor, Clark County, Wisconsin, George Edward, born 24 Nov 1905 in Neillsville, Clark County, Wisconsin, Gertrude, born about 1908-1909, possibly in Clark or Winnebago County, Dorothy, born about 1913, possibly in Winnebago or Manitowoc County, and Evelyn, born about 1916, possibly in Winnebago or Manitowoc County. The 5 living children were still with their parents during the 1920 census. I think I found Evelyn in the 1930 census, at the State Public School for Dependant Children in Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin. And I think I found Dorothy in the 1930 census at the Northern Colony and Training School, Chippewa, Wisconsin.
Charles, Mary, and son George were living in Neenah during the 1930 census. I lost track of Eva. Gertrude married Frank Retzloff.

Mary Pearl Coates seems to have had a sister, Laura Coates, who married William Wildish July 29, 1895 in Neillsville, Clark County, Wisconsin. Married Laura Wildish was living with William and Sarah Crowbar (Charles' parents), during the 1900 census.

Charles Crowbar had 3 known brothers, Harry, John, & Henry, and 1 or 2 known sisters, Anna Sires, and Mrs. Herman Kosseck. I don't know if Anna married Sires, then Kosseck?, or if there was another sister. Anna Sires was living with her parents and her children during the 1900 and 1905 census. I didn't look any further on the family.

I found some more info....I had been wondering why Mary's marriage record listed her mother as Matilda Allen, and Laura listed her mother as Mary James. I did a little more digging and found that Mary & Laura's mother, Sarah Matilda Allen Wife of Israel Crober/Crowbar, died 22 Feb 1879 in Weston, Clark County, Wisconsin. I found Israel in the 1880 census as a widower, but the 2 children, Mary Pearl & Laura, were not listed. Can't find them yet in 1880. But, Israel remarried (after the 1880 census) Anna M. James 04 Jul 1880 in Weston, Clark County, Wisconsin. Laura most likely thought of her as her mother. Israel died 02 Feb 1907 in Rusk County, Wisconsin. Possibly in Dewey. He was living there during the 1905 census. He is buried in Tony, Wis. I don't know where that is.

I found 2 birth records for unnamed females, with parents Israel Coates & Matilda Allen. Could be Mary & Laura? One was born 10 Jan 1877 in Waupun, and the other was born 12 Feb 1879. Sarah Matilda died 10 days later after this last birth.

I found a small article (committee report) about Dorothy at the Home for the Feeble Minded. She never married, and died May 10, 2005 at Brewster Village. I don't know where that is. It was in the Sheboygan paper (just a death notice). But her SSDI lists Appleton as her last residence. If I ever get time to go to the courthouse here in Appleton, I will look for a death record.

Gertrude, who married Frank Retzloff, died 20 Jun 1997 in Neenah, Winnebago County, I think.

I think I found Eva in the 1920 census. she was an inmate at the Wisconsin Industrial School for Girls in Milwaukee.

It looks like Israel Cober/Crowbar was in the Civil War also. I found him in the index (maybe). Haven't checked into it yet.

I can't thank you enough again!!! This is more than I ever hoped to find. I was able to get Dorothy and Gertrude's intake forms from Northern Colony. The Family History on one of the forms states that "Mother serving term at Waupun for 5yrs." I don't live far from Waupun, so at some point I will go up there an find out what that means.

I've very excited to unravel the rest of this family mystery!
